How can I minimize the lag in my game? this is unplayable

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have been trying to play with my friends but when they connect, its just a mess of laggy horror. Even on day 1, you have people rubberbanding around, taking 5 seconds to harvest one item, and never mind even fighting enemies, they practically snipe you across the screen.

I started out with hosting a regular game and we couldn't figure out why we were lagging so bad. I had the other two friends host, same thing. Eventually I created a dedicated server and it still did not solve the lag issue. I'm even lagging as the host, which I have no idea why that is...and everyone else has under 40 ping.

My internet speed: 95 down, 20 up

My PC spec: i7-4940k, 32gb ram, gtx 980,

My friend's internet speed: practically the same as mine

My friends' PC specs: i5 and i7, 16gb ram, cards better than gtx 770s.

I don't know if this is a steam server issue or what but this happens every day that we try, but while we can play any other multiplayer OR online steam game perfectly fine, even unoptimized games like 7 days to die with zero issues, we just cannot play don't starve together and we don't know why.

Have you tried turning off client lag prediction?

It's in the options at the lower right labeled as "Lag Compensation" setting it to "none".

This will make all of your inputs do nothing until the server responds back and then make your client move.

The pro to this con is that you will always see the world as it is and no rubber banding/sniping will ever happen.

If the server chokes then you will feel it in the movement as the client sits there momentarily until the choke is over.

There are a few things that may be contributing to this. Is your computer on WiFi? If not, make sure any onboard WiFi cards are disabled. Is there any chance windows or other applications are downloading update while you are playing?

If you would like to keep digging into this, there are some things I would like you to collect.

When you start to encounter the severe lag, could you press ~ and type: TheSim:Profile(7)

If you are running caves, then as quickly as you can, press ~ then the up arrow key, then Ctrl, then enter.

The files I'd like you to collect are located in documents/ Klei/dontstarvetogher. (And if running a caves server, in the cluster directory for your server). They are all the files with "profile" in the name And the files ending in ".log". Could you zip them all up and attach it to a post?

I hope that is clear enough, if not I can write up something better when I'm at a computer.

Thanks
