EinRobot
I was just trying to imagine where Klei could take the game with dlc. I thought about space and the loneliness and vastness of it. Planets could be biomes. You could start off on a small planet that would require thorough exploration to aquire a ship to reach other biomes. Interplanetary travel could work like sailing in shipwrecked. Meteors could be waves and solar storms could hinder travel. Some planets (biomes) would lack atmosphere and require crafted gear. Idk, just day dreaming. I do think the concept could be fleshed out. What do ya think, sirs? CaptainChaotica
(thumbs-up sign) IT STINKS! No, seriously though...huh. Don't Starve: Alpha Centauri? (as in, the sequel that takes place on a new, hostile alien planet...) Might be interesting for a mod, but I dunno about in the actual game. It'd be WAY off the timeline. Wilson would be an old man by the time even the Apollo 11 mission came around in real life, and that's not even counting the already-older characters like Maxwell, Wickerbottom, and Woodlegs. Could work as a _mod_ though. Canon game content? Erm...well, it could be a winky nod/crossover with Oxygen Not Included? But it still wouldn't work in anything other than a mod or fanfic. It COULD be worth fleshing out in mod form, though. ...Notorious Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/69646-dlc-dreaming/#findComment-806108 Share on other sites
EinRobot
Yeah, the time line would be vastly different. Is "Don't Starve 2050" too cheesy a title? Go where no mod has gone before... I just thought planetary differences would be a cool jumping off point for a plethora of vastly different resources, wildlife, and fauna. CaptainChaotica
(...Just in case, I should explain that the "It stinks!" was an MST3K reference, because you ended your post with "What do you think, sirs?" and...I assume you got that, but, ya know. I don't ACTUALLY think your idea stinks. : P) Yeah...that does sound cool, but it'd be an entirely different game. I'd totally play it though. Planetary colony building with asteroid mining for minerals, upgrading your ship so you can go further/faster and get to the planets with the better stuff, starting off from a little metal shack made out of the hull of your old colony ship and having to find edible native foods _fast_ before the limited rations you brought with you from Earth run out...I like it! I'd totally play that. On a related note, the first time I told my mom (who is also a bit of a gamer) the basics of what Don't Starve was like ("You start off from nothing, in the middle of a harsh wilderness, and you eventually build up from hunting and gathering to farms and fancy stone walls" etc.) her reaction was: "Ah, so it's like you're The Martian!" This would be Don't Starve-esque mechanics as LITERALLY The Martian. Or _some_ other planet, anyway. : P ...Notorious Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/69646-dlc-dreaming/#findComment-806527 Share on other sites
EinRobot
Totally got the MST3K reference, I was pleasantly surprised you got my invention exchange ref. Super happy we brought that show back. I can see your mom's point. That's why I love don't starve really. It's a re-skined, retold age old story we can all relate to. Alone in the wilderness of life with nobody and nothing to help. Using your wits and resources at hand to survive. CaptainChaotica
I've ALWAYS loved a good man-vs-nature story, in fact, of the three big classic conflict types (the other two being man vs. man and man vs. himself) it's probably my favourite. Much better when it's ACTUALLY man-vs-nature, too--as soon as you throw in a sentient villian who is _deliberately_ making the conditions harsh or setting traps, it becomes something completely else. With wilderness stories, I like it better if it STAYS that way and the danger is like, an unthinking set of mechanics to figure out how to overcome? The second you put in some deliberate jerk the whole tone changes. (Maxwell doesn't count, 'cos although he did set up some of the stuff in the Don't Starve world, that was long ago, he isn't here _now_, and I get the feeling a lot of the things are kind of just running wild and doing whatever they want now.) That's why, on a related (?) note, I like the whole atmosphere of the game "Near Death". Would've been SO easy--and expected--to have this dark, creepy, isolated atmosphere...and then throw in zombies--AAAA, jumpscare! But no! It's JUST you vs. the Antarctic night--which is months long. Just cold, and dark, and an abandoned, falling-apart research station. I love it. ANYway. Speaking of man (in the generic sense, meaning "humanity") vs. winter, Deerclops just showed up at my base in DST right before I ended my last session. And the nearest dangerous thing I can lead him to (this is the first year and I don't have much yet) is WAY far away. Lovely! ...Notorious Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/69646-dlc-dreaming/#findComment-806835 Share on other sites

Octyabr
You have quite a wild imagination! But why not Mod dreaming instead? The modding potential of this game is huge, using the base structure, you can build a completely different game, take the Screecher for instance. I remember a mod I saw some time ago that changes the battle mechanics to a turn based style, (like Final Fantasy). You can even make a management game like Oxygen not Included Don't Starve Style (Food not included?) Spoiler On 6/10/2016 at 10:41 PM, Doggy_Davis said: How about a Halloween/Horror themed DLC?
