@TwardyBrzoskwin When your friend joins, it should print a useful message in the log. If you could get his Documents/Klei/DoNotStarveTogether/client_log.txt file and upload it or put it on http://pastebin.com/ or something we might learn more (such was what mod it's failing to get).

This might be the problem. What are your server settings? Make sure that it is not local.

Also, are you getting the mods from Steam, or are you downloading them manually?

Set all your mods (server only) like

all_clients_require_mod = false
client_only_mod = false

and set your friend's mods (client only) like

all_clients_require_mod = false
client_only_mod = true

That way you bypass the check.

 

Also consider buying the game, or at least get a more recent version.

It is much better to buy the game. You get two copies by buying it. You could split the costs with your friend. You will avoid all the problems this way. It is not more expensive than buying a pizza and it lasts much longer.

You can't really expect support for a game that you didn't even buy.
