Implement Vote Kick on Klei official servers

Recommended Posts

The amount of griefing on your official public servers is just ridiculous. At least allow for vote kick on the servers. Online multiplay is garbage in most games and this one is proving to have a crap community unfortunately. You need to implement tools to control this like other games have.

Or introduce rep system where you can up or down vote players you have played with.

Otherwise only people with friend to play can really enjoy your product.

I think, this game just wasn't designed for public servers. Some servers have ban\kick options, but there you can see, that players prefer to ban dead players instead of reviving them.

That's true, but it's not a fundamental flaw.

Early FPSes that introduced features like friendly fire and vehicles initially offered grief-prone experience.  Regardless of what genre we call DST, it too introduces a lot of distinct gameplay which has resulted in a grief-prone experience.

The solutions to early FPS problems all ended up being relatively simple.  Votekicks were one of the simplest, but typically the best solutions were just simple game rules or systems that made griefing ineffective.

In DST i've proposed a Grief Points system where when someone griefs an owned object, the owner gets notified and can punish or forgive. Punishing gives grief points to the griefer (often resulting in their being kicked and unable to join other servers), while restoring the destroyed objects.  Under the hood the system would take some time to implement, but the player-facing experience would be just that simple interaction (someone griefs you, you punish, they're kicked, your stuff is restored.)  Grief points would be hidden (so players aren't encouraged to game the system)

Basically the way to solve griefing is to make it unprofitable for the griefer. "Profit" for a griefer is basically:

  • Attention,
  • Seeing others rage, and
  • Knowing they've permanently destroyed someone's hard work (possibly preventing that person's survival.)

With vote-kicking you actually give the griefer more attention, vote-kicking itself is a form of rage, and the buildings are still destroyed.  It's nice to get the griefer off the server, but it really doesn't address the core of griefing.  (I've seen people successfully vote-kick a griefer, and then still die due to the fact that the griefer set them back so far in the middle of winter.)

That's without mentioning vote-kicking can be a source of griefing.

EDIT: Which hopefully makes my original point that griefing isn't some unavoidable un-fixable problem with DST.  With the right systems in place, it would feel like an unprofitable waste of time to griefers (which would result in dramatically less griefing.)

Votekick could end up being abused too easily. It would require some restrctions, such as ghosts and players under, say, 10 days old can't votekick. This would be to prevent some troll calling their friends and suddenly kicking people. Or a bunch of people, just because they died and not getting revived right away, kicking the last alive player.

Even with restrictions, could end up being kicked just because people just don't like you.

I'd be fine with an automated kick function for those who afk as ghosts. It wouldn't solve everything, but would prevent at least some form of griefing.
