Fighting things at sea having a chance to spawn Sharks (sea hounds)

Recommended Posts

Just thought it could be an interesting way to up the ante a bit when you're at sea. Probably a very small percent chance based on hits/kills, but I like the idea of having to be a bit paranoid about it happening without warning whenever blood is spilled in the water.

Something to consider!  :wilson_goodjob:

I've been encountering sea hounds somewhat randomly at sea. It's not the hound cycle, it happens about midway between those, and it will usually just be one or two hounds, maybe a couple of times. They will usually make their little "whee" sound once then there they are. They will usually swim right up, take a big bite out of your boat, then immediately get distracted by the nearest dogfish or jelly. Gives you a chance to take them out before any others come, which usually do.

Anyway, it has made me a bit paranoid about going on the boat without a life jacket.

Even worse are the random near-shore attacks. I just died in my current game because of this. Hop on the boat, start to move away from shore, and five sea hounds came out of nowhere, no "whee" sounds, no character quips about things smelling sharky or anything like that. All five hit me at once before I could get back to shore, and that was it. (Cargo boat health is really quite pitiful... :\)

I think I'm most paranoid about that, because it's completely random and without warning. I figure I'm going to have to hop on the boat and sit there for a while to make sure it isn't going to happen before I leave shore now.

Yeah I've actually run into a few things like this myself, but I just assumed that it was leftover sharks from another time that I booked it the heck out of there and left them out on the water. It's gotten me killed before when it definitely shouldn't have, but the real cause is probably just how lazy and meh I get in the later parts of the game because I admittedly get a little on the bored side once I've made and done mostly everything.  :wilson_nerdy:

It's definitely not old sharks just hanging around. I've kited and killed them (thankful for the distractions they chase after) each time, and more keep appearing. I think there are just random ones when your out at sea.

I am curious about the groups near shore, though. I think that may be a bug, as it happens too quickly and they destroy the boat almost instantly once they surround you.

Is it bad that I actually like the idea of the seas getting more and more hostile as time goes on?  :wilson_sneaky:

I've always really wanted a way for difficulty to really scale into the lategame somehow in Don't Starve as the days go up more and more, until the world gets very hostile and very difficult around day 300. Because usually for me the game starts to get a little stale at that point. Maybe that's part of why I started this thread, but I should probably just make a different thread just for that subject and see how it goes over.

No it is the meat that's dropping into the sea.

You can consistently spawn sharx with about 20 morsels and farm hounds teeth with it.

From tuning.lua

FISHING_SHARK_SPAWN_CHANCE = 0.2,

SHARKBAIT_SHARK_SPAWN_MULT = 0.005, --Chance of spawning a shark is this number multiplied by hunger value of the food

And to me it appears that it simply does not work with monster meat. If you kill a jelly fish, thats enough to spawn.

Thanks for that @Kror

Ah! Well don't I look silly now. Didn't know this was already in the game.
