Base Thread

Couldn't find a base thread, interested to see what people have managed to build despite SW's less forgiving mechanics.

Here's what I've got so far, I'm hoping it gets a nice deteriorated look after winter but I'm pretty sure it's going to get flattened into oblivion.

nice! Looks great. I don't have anything worthwhile to share though. My bases are incredibly minimalistic

I thought I was prepared for Monsoon Season  :nightmare:  Apparently I wasn't.  I had stacks of sandbags ready to protect my little base, but they didn't stop a puddle from forming directly under my two fridges and alchemy engine.  Cue me panicking and building Base #2 directly next to it and hurriedly building some sandbag walls to stop it from getting worse.

Monsoon season has been a real disaster so far.  Not.  A.  Fan.

Does the obsidian firepit burn longer? What are the benefits compared to normal firepits?

Burns longer and gives a greater light radius. As far as I can tell it's not bothered by wind either, which makes it a great end-game replacement for the chiminae.

To give you an idea of the light radius (and it's usefulness) my firepit is about 5 or 6 turf from the coast there and at max brightness I can sail all the way out into medium depth water which leaves a ton of shallow water lit up for trawling at night in summer. You also don't really need to bother with chasing nightmare hands down since it's radius starts off so large losing a bit isn't a big deal.

I'll edit in a screenshot later that demonstrates just how huge it is at max brightness.

EDIT: I've circled the same piece of seaweed in both screenshots...you get the idea.

That's a lot of mussels! Do you work out? Sorry. I'm a terrible person for that pun.  :wilson_sneaky:

Anyway, do I see a taker for the idea of adding sponges to the game so this problem can be eliminated if you nip it at the bud?  :wilson_goodjob:

I am very much a taker of that idea.  I think a sponge is a great idea.  A trawl net exclusive that's rare to find sounds like the best idea for this because despite what everyone says, this is a pretty big issue  :wilson_goodjob: It was so frustrating having it spawn right there.  I wouldn't even mind still having to remake my structures, it was

just frustrating having to frantically move my base to the only place that hadn't been flooded yet!

I'm right there with ya, happens to me every single season, I swear.

And I know a lot of people say that we should just welcome the challenge instead of looking for ways to solve it, since it's really not that hard but I just personally don't feel like it's good enough for me to say "Well I guess that's that." because it's really unsatisfying and really not fun for me personally to watch all my hard work just crap out when it would be so cool if I could really just kick monsoon season's butt if I'm willing to take the time and effort to prepare correctly. I always felt like that's what Don't Starve is all about! :wilson_nerdy:
