Having started a new world, I'm solely reliant on Jackalopes as the primary source of my sustenance. I am usually able to round up 5-8 berries and a few carrots and collect enough materials to make 2-4 traps before I begin to run low on daylight. The berries and carrots I hold onto, using them for bait in the traps when I set them near some rabbit holes. After that is done, I chop down a fouple of trees and settle down for the night.

The following day typically consists of me waiting for my traps to catch something and collecting the catch before resetting and rebaiting my traps. I can usually get around 4-6 morsels which, after being cooked, get me through the next... day and a half or so.

But this is where I run into a wall. After the first couple of days, the Jackalopes seem to run dry. I don't know if it's my hunting methods or if it's just bad luck, but after a successful haul in the beginning, I find myself lucky to get 1 or 2 Jackalopes a day, even with 4-6 baited traps. This forces me to eat the remainder of my berries (and carrots if I have any left) and restricts me to only local exploration due to high hunger and little food.

I'd like to know what methods others use for hunting Jackalopes. Do people place their traps in specific locations? Do people move them to new areas? Do they place their traps together or spread them out?

I know that one can kill a Jackalope by getting between it and its burrow and attacking as it runs for cover, but not only is this precious time wasted, it's often effort wasted as well as the Jackalope usually runs to a different hole than expected.

Sounds like your overhunting them.

Most things in game currently run off a 3 day timer, berries, grass and saplings regrow in 3 days, pigs respawn in 3 days so it wouldn't surprise me if rabbits also respawned in 3 days, so you should probably start looking for other food sources.

If you find a beefalo herd or feed berries to pigs you can get manure to start farming, or if your feeling up to the challange you can steal a tallbird egg and raise yourself a hunting companion, the small bird is quite adept at hunting all the red birds and crows for a near endless supply of morsels.

And if worse comes to worse you can always chase birds for seeds to roast.

I usually try to find a source of manure early on. Unfortunately there isn't normally a pig 'town' or herd of Beefalo close by and any major trek would easily result in my starving.

I was wondering if the Jackalopes might be on a respawn cycle.

1. I wouldn't bait the traps, do what Snarks suggested by putting the traps right over the hole so that it'll trap them when they try to run back to it. Use the berries and carrots to cook them and eat them yourself, every bit of food counts in the beginning.

2. When all else fails, try to find a jackalope that's far from it's hole (gets confusing when there are tons in one area but you'll have to make a judgement call) and cut it off when trying to attack it. Meaning attack it from the direction of its hole so that when it tries to run away to its hole it's running towards you. The only downside to this is that every jackalope on your screen will hear the death cry and run back to their holes (you can place traps over their holes and use that mechanic to your advantage).

3. Cooked seeds. The amount of how many seeds that drop in the game (as of right now) is absolutely enough to get your through your day if you mix it with a morsel or a berry or two; maybe even just on seeds alone. Not to mention they're a decent source of health for the early game too since honey's not as easily accessible right off the bat. Also just remember to cook everything (that's cookable) that you want to eat too, give's bonuses to both hunger and health gained.
