Less Foraging, More Farming and Hunting?

Recommended Posts

I feel like food right now is too easy. I survived 40 days on purely seaweed.

I completely agree with reducing the hunger value of seaweed, maaybe leaving the healing value, and maybe leaving the hunger value of the dried variety so you have to sink resources and time into making it valuable.

But even aside from seaweed, there are tons of berries, limpets and coconuts and none of them go barren in the winter season. It's great for exploring, because you can easily sustain yourself just sailing around (so actually it's perfect for Early Access where we're just looking to figure out this new world, maybe they already intend to tweak it to be harder later?) - but I dunno... I'd like more gameplay out of getting food than 'pick'.

- I think it would be cool to build rice paddies, and have recipes with that, since there's lots of seafood to mix with it, and there's lots of flooded land. Maybe build them in the mangrove biome or grow them in flooding season?

- I'd also love orchards, to grow bananas and other fruit. Yes you can grow jungle trees for bananas now, but I'd like a more reliable method that takes a lot of initial effort to set up.

- And this is a weird one but I want a tool to pick coconuts without cutting the tree down - it can have durability and wear out. I'm not sure why I want it, I just do.

- I want to be forced to hunt more crabs, wobsters, jellyfish - to go fishing. Right now those generally aren't worth the trouble you have to go through to get them when there's tons of more filling food just waiting to be picked nearby.

- Also maybe buff mussels or be able to place mussel sticks anywhere in shallow water.

- The meatballs recipe needs a serious nerf - I collected 200 pieces of hail in hurricane season in my ice box, just standing at my base. Add monster meat and I'm set on food for probably the whole year, from just stockpiling in that one season. And even limpets + 3 seaweed = meatballs, it's just too easy!

(P.S. The secret answer is that I'm just going to play Wigrid with a 'no meatball challenge'. XD)

This is just my feeling - I'd like to know, do others agree?

I agree with you. By making food so easily available the game looses a huge part of content.

The meatball nerf is almost a necessity but after that there are still too much resources out there. However it is kind of a part of tropical islands to have plenty of food resources.

I would rather change the food mechanic, forcing you to eat meat, vegetables, fruits and fish by having separate stomachs for every food type. If one goes empty you suffer maximum health loss until you eat the missing food type.

This way you have to go out and find bananas and berries. You have to go into the seas and catch fish. You have to collect seaweed or farm vegetables. You have to eat monster meat or morsels etc.

That would force you into eating more different food types so you just can't spam morsel + 3 seaweed meatballs.

That's the only way I can think of having a broad food variety and a balanced food system.

Well you could also make a mechanic where a character can get sick of eating a certaint type of food just how in real life you get sick of eating the same type of food over and over and over for many days straight.

Like you still got the foodvalue and healing but once a char gets sick of a foodtype you also loose sanity each time you eat that specific type of food and you need to avoid it for maybe 4-5 days so he wants to eat it again.

At least that would make it possible to make the overabundance of food a bit more risky as well as making things not to complicated.

Tropical islands have plenty of food in real world too, they have their own dangers (wild animals, poisons, various mortal ilnesses, and a huge etc) but harvesting food in the jungle should be easier than in a forest, for example..... FAR easier

Entire communities can live in a jungle with very little hunting....

The vast majority of the tribes in the real world live by foraging, they usually dont even farm, not a little bit
