korruptid
Like mods on most servers, and being instantly killed by people using mods, and apparently these plagued pretty much every public server. So...whats the situation? Is it "safe" to jump into a random public game? That's kind of one of the draws for a multiplayer dont starve, playing with random people. Are there public servers without mods and such? applebottom
Are there public servers without mods and such? There are. Lots of them. You can filter to "No Mods" when searching for servers. You can also see a list of a server's mods before you join. Some servers are actually better because they have mods against common griefing actions. I don't think people can insta-kill you with mods... unless it's the server admin himself trolling via the console. This isn't like *game redacted* where people can hack into their local files and suddenly have godlike status while everyone else on the server is on normal mode. (Feel free to correct me on that last statement.) If you want a server with no mods or "cheating" players, try the dedicated Klei servers. Just beware that servers with no basic protection mods are more uh... dangerous. Some players might burn or hammer down your base just for fun. But you can avoid that by living a nomadic life. TL;DR it's fun. Buy it. Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/60034-should-i-buy-it-heard-some-bad-things/#findComment-692492 Share on other sites
Kzisor
@korruptid, as Applebottom stated, DST is fun to play when you have someone to play with. A lot of people are back to playing DS because of Shipwrecked, however, there are still people who only play with others on DST so that means there are still a lot of active servers. Unfortunately the downside to playing on a dedicated server is you're at the mercy of the server host. My suggestion if you buy the game, find a Steam Group that plays DST as most have servers that you can play on with other like-minded people. It's great to play with like-minded people as it reduces the amount of drama you will come across. So...whats the situation? Is it "safe" to jump into a random public game? That's kind of one of the draws for a multiplayer dont starve, playing with random people. Are there public servers without mods and such? You'll hear things like that on almost any game with online multiplayer, but it is actually pretty good here. There are a handful of servers that have literally pages of mods of them, but for the most part, most modded servers just have simple timesavers (marked wormholes, ice flingomatic distance draws, etc). There are plenty of un-modded ones to look into as well, and if you avoid pvp servers, you'll avoid most griefers too. (Honestly I can't even remember the last griefer I had to deal with, but then again I'm on the beta branch). You can rest fairly easy though, it's a very safe buy, you'll find what you're looking for. You've got plenty of options to find an ideal server to call home. Heck, even if you prefer to locally host, you'll still have a steady flow of players and numerous ways to undo any damage (accidental or intentional) at your fingertips.
