An issue has been present ever since the beginning of Don't Starve.

The axe animation.

It is always... Wrong. When chopping from behind or in front of the tree, it looks okay, but still misses the tree. But from the sides, it is the most obvious. The axe completely misses the tree, and instead the character seems to be chopping with their clutched fists. Has this been simply overlooked, or is there a reason for leaving it like this? @JoeW

It doesn't exactly miss the tree... it just hits the leaves, on evergreens. On the birchnut trees, yeah, it's more apparent.

This happens with the rod and the ponds, and the pickaxe with the boulders, but since what you are supposed to hit is very big, you have to try hard to make it so the animation end doesn't match the pond/rock, so you don't see Wilson missing it.

The only fix I can see for this is to make the chop action need you to position in 1 out of 4 positions to make the animation match, instead of just closing in next to the object you want to chop. This would screw with the locomotor and controllers.
