DST - Achievement, Balancing, and Benchmarking for 1 - 6 Players

Recommended Posts

Adding on to what BeastNips said, if you run out of grass and twigs (which can sometimes happen in winter) make boomerangs and actively hunt the rabbits. Boomerangs are just one board, one charcoal and one silk to make. You can also take out a turkey in two hits with one.

And keep the hounds away from your spider nest. Unless you have two+ higher level nests, they're no match and the nest will be destroyed by the hounds. Especially fire hounds.

Yes definitely do this if you need to, it turns trees and silk (both easy to get and renewable) into food.

Also it might be worth learning how to hunt elephants (can't remember their real name), as they are pretty awesome for food!

Achievements won't help this game at all in the long run. The game is player driven rather than developer in the sense that you can play it however you wish. You want a vegetarian-friendly world? Go for it. Disable Winter. A world straight out of your nightmares? Turn the lights out.

As far as the issue with starving... it's a learning game, really. The more you play, the more efficient ways you'll learn to do things. I remember the first time I got through Winter. It wasn't the best way but hey, I did it. But you know what? It meant it wasn't impossible for me.

Achievements would be fine to have, in some games I feel they add a lot (in Crusader Kings II and Europa Universalis IV I find them very goal-orienting and fun to shoot for). I don't know that achievements would add all that much to DST though.

However, if we assume there's a significant opportunity cost to implementing achievements into the pc version, basically some other feature isn't getting done at all, or something good gets delayed just because of implementing achievements. I wouldn't like that so I'm slightly against "wasting" time on achievements even if they could prove to be fun. I feel the game doesn't really need them, you should play the game how you want and to the best of your abilities, achievemetns don't fit its style so much. Achievements are fun if they inspire you to set absurd goals to shoot for that you wouldn't think of on your own. Achievements just for the sake of bragging rights now that I find truly ridiculous. Anyone actually impressed by steam achievements isn't a person worth impressing in the frist place and anyone getting a significant ego boost due to achievments in a game is a pathetic hilarious clown.

Also the thread starter is behaving in a ridiculous fashion and is entirely worthy of ridicule imo.

Therefore, there is a lot I may not know yet

That's alright, don't worry... survive and die a few times... that's good... you'll get the hang of things...

In conclusion, I feel like these things are the only thing that keep me from really digging into this game as I am such an Achievement hunter. Yea I finally got past winter last night but it just doesn't feel right. I set carrots to lots because we starved so much and now I feel like I didn't really achieve anything... maybe we just cheated... sigh... GIVE ME OFFICIAL SETTINGS

I've played games that have achievements in them too... from Borderlands, Theif... etc... it's good for them to have those.... but Don't Starve is different... if everyone got instructions on how to play the game (by following achievements instructions), then everyone can get it... but if you discover it for yourself, you'll get more of a kick out of it... the first time I played Don't Strave, i died... alot... the most devastating was my winter death... (I didn't even know you could die of frostbite!)

... I was scared to go in a worm hole... O_O

... I was suspicious of the eyebone so I didn't pick it up :-)

... I saw a giant blue egg just sitting there... I picked it up... then off camera, I heard a giant bird and I was chased until I died because of the Grue... XD

... A tree guard spawned... and well... you get it...

but then I got to unlock Willow (which is kind of an Achievement if you think about it)

I lived, died, and unlocked more characters... that made me feel... great... sure I died, but I felt great... I discovered it on my own without the help of guides... I hope you understand what I'm trying to convey...

I think it should balance out - you help each other learn by each discovering different things, so you all learn faster. However, you all waste more resources while learning and die more from it.

That's when you need your experience... delegate with your friends and think of a way to overcome this... there are default settings already... and if you feel like it's difficult, use your own presets alright? But then again, you did say that it felt like cheating so... are you trying to say that the game modes in the game are difficult for players to live on but when you tweaked them yourself (which is a game mechanic made for situations such as this), you felt like you were cheating...

Both Kevin and Jamie felt strongly that they did not want to force a particular manner of gameplay by guiding players into making certain decisions just to receive rewards. This was predictable, boring, and caused players to quit the game once guidance ceased. Instead, they want you to find the motivation and drive within yourself, as that is the ultimate reward. Overcoming adversity and challenge on your own terms provides long-lasting results that will stick with a person long after the glory of beating a side-quest has faded from memory.

There's presets for those. If you want it easy, go "Together Forever" if you want it normal go on "Default" if you want it hard do "Harsher World" and if you want "Hardcore" do "Lights Out" You can use them and then edit them.

...

Therefore, there is a lot I may not know yet

I don't think the others in the forum are trying to antagonize you, some may seem harsh to some but take them with a grain of salt...

Thank God someone actually gets where i am coming from. I was about to go crazy... thank you

Wasn't your post about Achievements? If you wanted to know about people's play-styles then just say so... it was good of @BeastNips, to tell you about their play-style by the way... thank you...

...

Also, if this is a suggestion, you could post it in the suggestions section instead of the general discussions section :)

I have also made the mistake of posting my suggestions in the wrong... sub-forum(?)

...

Also, have you played Don't Starve - Reign of Giants?

:happypigs:  :juggling:  :yaypigs:

No. DST is not too hard. For this type of game, it is meant to be more difficult. You are given literally no instructions. I died twice before I figured out how to live past my first night. But once you've figured out most of the mechanics, the game is much easier. There are people on the forums complaining from both sides of the spectrum - too hard, too easy. For rogue-like games, it should be leaning on the difficult side.

Each person does need to pull their own weight, but it's much more efficient if you do it cooperatively. With more people, there are more mistakes, more waste of resources = more difficult. I don't see a problem with that. Just learn from mistakes.

What does this have to do with anything? I'm Chinese too.

Please note the plurals in your quoted comment. There are a few presets and 3 game modes currently in the beta.

I don't consider myself elite, just experienced. I've played 200+ hours, but I'm not very imaginative. I don't think of creative solutions, I just learn from my mistakes and learn from how other people do things. On non-PvP worlds, I do play as one of the group. Fighting a 3-tier den is easier with more people, but not if someone makes a mistake - that's not the game's fault. I don't expect or want someone who has no idea how to kite enemies to help me kill a beefalo. They should watch and learn, but not get themselves killed. If someone wants to collect grass with me, we should split up the map so we're not overlapping. But I do bring back koalefants so others can help get that first hit off.

So what part of the code base did you do for Klei? We are giving them suggestions and feedback to make the game better for us and so they can make a better game. Both sides get the benefits here.

being american born Chinese doesnt mean you are China Chinese.... That just makes you American who happens to have Chinese blood... I have native American blood in me but it doesnt make me Indian. Also, your are and ass "So what part of the code base did you do for Klei?"

such a snarky and condescending tone. I may not have done coding but mods are the only way this game will survive.   And you just proved my point when you said many people complain it is too hard and many comlain it is too easy. THATS WHY NEED OFFICIAL SETTINGS that span across the spectrum... Are you just intentionally misunderstanding me???? I didnt just say the game was too hard... THAT WASN'T MY POINT

Doesn't matter the method, you're still getting things done for the betterment of everyone. You can still play and survive together without having to hold hands and skip down the paved road.

You have no idea how to do things out of your western cultural mindset do you? Good luck if you ever travel to China, Japan, or Korea

WHy is the only thing anyone is focusing on I said is the game is too hard or Achievements?? MY MAIN POINT WAS OFFICIAL settings!!!

Also, you are the main reason I am getting frustrated because you responded to my innocent and polite original post with narcissism, condescending tones, and rudeness. So, **** off

MY MAIN POINT WAS OFFICIAL settings!!!

Default is the official "easy" setting.

Default plus is the official "medium" setting.

Lights out is the official "hard" setting.

I could write you a mod that changes the names of the settings if you want.

There's no need to swear over this.

Lol, I'm washing my hands of this. And I was born in China. Also an unnecessary reply to an unnecessary comment. *shrug*

Hahah, could you write me a mod that makes you not a fucktard?

no you were not.  Lols... or if you were you were only born and then raised in USA. You have that superior American attitude. Also, you are washing your hands a lot. I hope they are clean

Hahah, could you write me a mod that makes you not a fucktard?

you asked for official settings, I gave you official settings.

Once again, no need for swearing.

I'm not sure why I bothered replying to you in the first place, this is probably just a troll account. Does Klei do IP bans, or just account bans?

No as a matter of fact I was not condescending in my first post, disagreement can be civil and doesn't always mean a personal attack, that was all in your head and your personal interpretation. My main point was basically that I don't think a player that has played a moderately complex to master game like DS for a relatively short time can make valid suggestions about game balancing. That's got nothing to do with you or even with the game, I'd hold the same to be true for any game.

Personally I don't care all that much about achievements either, so yeah imagine that there's people who don't share your opinion out there.

I think you did make a good suggestion about difficulty settings actually. There is actually a hard mode already and the default mode is just normal. Making the game easier than normal... well put in more carrots and berry bushes and maybe even a shorter winter and there you go. If that does not give you a sense of accomplishment then learn the ropes in easy mode with your friends and switch over to default settings later. Difficulty settings are... well I guess an okay idea but whatever you can do a manual preset for easier difficulties and harder difficulties are already implemented. Scaling carrots and such to the number of players online... I guess an okay idea as well but honestly just put carrots and bushes to lots, who cares you're not gonna be noobs forever just stick with it and upgrade to default eventually.

Guess what I don't like you either, based on how you reacted to anyone not sharing your views in this thread. You sound like a young angry teenager crybaby slamming the door and screaming "y'all don't understand me, none of you do!" down the hallway. So yeah I think you're ridiculous, but big whup who cares what other random people on the internet think - apart from you.
