What is the distance off-screen that bees don't produce honey?

Recommended Posts

(In the general discussion sub-forum as I don't think it's a bug - no pun intended.)

You see, playing as Wendy, I'd made some bee boxes a wee bit away from my base as to not be attacked every spring - and to make it so that Abigail didn't massacre all of my bees and leave loads of stingers lying everywhere.

I've noticed that after the 60+ days of having them that they produce hardly any honey; I've harvested a full box maybe... thrice? There's a patch of 14 flowers just across the road from the boxes, so I don't think it's a shortage of flowers - but if it is, that's easily sorted.

The firepit at my base is about 3 screens away as the crow flies. Here's a map view to demonstrate the distance:

I do also have mods, but none that are bee related.

Did anyone else have this issue? How did you combat the problem - besides moving your base or your bees?

Bees produce honey off-screen in my experience (non RoG). At least I found some after the first days of winter, after a long exploration, despite having picked them all dry just before setting off. A brief glance at the code supports my opinion.

  • Keep Boxes close to the base. If the player gets too far away, the game hibernates all bees and switches to a simplified model to simulate Honey production, which yields considerably less Honey. This tip is less effective in the Reign of Giants DLC, as all Bees become Killer Bees for the entirety of the Spring season, unless you use Walls to isolate the area.

For some reason I remember them giving an exact distance. You could probably tweak it in the game's code, but it would lag you considerably, considering you would need to turn up the distance for active AI, as well as turning up the distance before that simplified honey production code takes effect.

@tetrified, I remember an exact distance, too. It might be possible to change the code, but I don't know enough about coding and all that wizardry to be able to understand anything bar the buzz words that come up. :(

Alas, the bees make buttloads of honey whenever I run by (which is quite often), so it's not so bad. :)

Tah muchly.
