A Bevy of Suggestions and a Sprinkle of Feedback

Recommended Posts

Hello, first time to post, so sorry if I dunno if there's some sort of method or culture to this.

To make things simpler, I shall make a list format and a brief explanation of what I mean, and the feedback will sort of be intermingled with the suggestions about how DST currently is. Whether it's constrained to ONLY DST though, is questionable, I guess the ideas also sort of reach into the base game.

[i have no knowledge of the mods that people have created, so if I suggest something that's already a mod but not something Klei has said they don't want to implement, then sorry.]

ALL THIS READING WILL BE BOTHERSOME

  • Clockwork Shadow Factory: So everyone is having trouble with gears and the lack of Clockworks, I suggest a disappearing shadow factory that spawns 1 or 2 Clockworks of every fixed-ranged number of days, similar to when winter happens. Similar to the mechanic of a full moon for Werepigs, the Shadow Factory, as I would like to call it, would only appear somewhere randomly for one night on the map. Whether it spawns like a Lureplant (Only places you've been [Though, if you're good, you would have been all over the map at some point in the game]) or like the hounds (Just out of nowhere) is to your discretion. So, the Shadow Factory would be destructible of course, only for that one night though, and would spawn a Rook or Bishop or, heck, both (cause it just wouldn't be the same if it didn't look like it was impossible. =P) and would break into gears and I suppose any other loot you seem fit, possibly nightmare fuel, or, if left alone, would spawn a clockwork. Thinking about it as I type though, it should only spawn one clockwork, giving an incentive to both destroy it for more, but also creating a sort of sigh of exasperation to not attack it.
  • Island/Caves/Ruins Positioning: Honestly, I'm not sure how that is to be pulled off, which is why I understand the limitation of certain resources so far, but it would be nice to keep it all simultaneous, allowing exploration by different players in different areas while still being able to communicate. I mean, what if you die in separate areas? Ghosts can't use the methods of quick transportation like a wormhole, so they probably won't be able to use the cave entrance too. Not much to say about this because I don't know how it really would work out, but I hope that it's kept in mind.
  • Cannibalism: I know, quite an if-fy topic there, isn't it? Since PVP is allowed however, there, as of yet, seems to be no legitimate incentive to kill a person. I mean, stealing their resources is one, but their ghost form is more of a bother than they want to put up with already  (Especially in winter). So human flesh, or, keeping with the game's culture, maybe a human brain, can be harvested for some nefarious purpose. You have telltale heart, so what can you do with a brain? =P I can suggest some things, but I should perhaps leave this open to the imagination now. Though I will say, you can already have Clockworks as a follower in the base game, so having WX-78 as a follower would be quite fun too....
  • Bone Weapons: I'm sort of surprised this hasn't been implemented, (hopefully people from Klei actually read this) but why aren't bone weapons an official thing? There are these skeletons you hammer and turn to ash (I can see the poetry in that, by the way though. =P) but I just feel like they should give something too. On top of some loot that spawns around them. How this is done and balanced though, I haven't the foggiest idea. It just seems like the logic follows- tentacle spikes, fish and frog legs, web, stinger, bone splinters - and so forth.
  • Custom Guns/Gloves: Obscure, isn't it? For a game that has a mystical and dark but also science-y feel, I feel like that it should have things like a makeshift gun or some kind of special glove. So, for the magical steampunk mood, there should be a gun that fires electricity, [i'm sorry, I don't have a clever Don't Starve-esque name] , refilled by a number of shots through the lightning rod. This should also be made of items that are not so numerous, like purple gems and gears. Sort of like the telelocator staff and its counterpart. No, I don't believe there should be guns that shoot out bullets with the gunpowder. I know it should follow its namesake, but I don't think bullets belong in a game like Don't Starve. I forgot to mention the catch for this gun, however. It will not be lethal, simply allowing a few seconds of stun, you know, like when a mob or monster is hit and it can't hit you for that half of a half second. Like that, but for longer, and only that purpose. This would fit well for multiplayer, as it would leave a player responsible for the firing of said gun. Of course, the laws of physics (Hah, Don't Starve physics) dictates that the larger the target, the more decreased the stun time. I feel like I should have made gloves another suggestion, but I'll add it.
  • Gloves: We have weapons and armors and staffs (not really feeling the shield vibe) so why not gloves? Gauntlets that let you hit harder? Gloves that let you hold things that are dangerous with your bare hands? Ones that have some sort of special effect, similar to a staff, but made of different materials. Not much to say about this one though. Maybe other forum viewers can give an idea.
  • Core Enemy: This suggestion ranges from DST and base game. The story has an "end" we know. Still unsure of some things, but maybe it was a good move to leave things ambiguous for the imagination to flourish. However, once you reach the core, as you've already created the Ruins biome, deeper, possibly in an area past the Ruins biome, should be a shadow enemy of the player. A shadow clone, if you will. Or maybe Dark [insert name] or something. Again, not sure what would be Don't Starve-eque enough. One that is as strong as the player or substantially stronger and makes the player's sanity zero instantaneously. ("WHAT?! But that's an impossible battle!" This is why preparation is key in the game now, isn't it? You know there are sanity restoring things, and you know how to kite, so yeah... though, a related suggestion being, like the beekeeper's hat, dark armor may not let it hit your sanity as hard.) As to going about fighting it, it can be an all out brawl I suppose, of kiting and stunning and recovering sanity really fast. I feel that, however, this should be a battle of both brains and brawn. Referencing back to the update puzzles Klei had for the story (Clever, I might add, though I never solved anything, I'm not nearly as clever as those puzzles), there should perhaps be a puzzle mechanic. Don't Starve as the game in general sort of lacks a puzzle mechanic or any puzzle mechanic, really. If that's something Klei wants to implement at all though, I'm not sure. This is all opinion.

I realize my suggestions are probably imbalanced with the game's mechanics, so, at least they're just suggestions.

So as of now, these are all the suggestion that I could think of, giving some feedback, like I said. Really condensed, huh? Anyway, I'm a fan of the game. To be honest though, I did play beta early access illegally pirated.... So I'm possibly missing some details on any updates after the pirated versions were taken down (Or rather, I started feeling bad for pirating it and not supporting the game financially). Don't Starve Together is starting out great (subtracting those jerks who ruin the game for everyone else as ghosts) and I'm grateful for legally being chosen for beta mode.

------So it is that I have reached the limit of what I can suggest, so I leave you with this: Remember to trap your spiders, and no matter what, Don't Starve (Or freeze, or burn, or go crazy, or get bitten, or get scratched, or get spiked, or get battered, or get lost in the dark ). =P

Gloves that let you hold things that are dangerous with your bare hands?

Spiky Bush?

So, for the magical steampunk mood, there should be a gun that fires electricity, [i'm sorry, I don't have a clever Don't Starve-esque name]

...Stun Gun?

Cannibalism: I know, quite an if-fy topic there, isn't it?

Long pig... but you probably knew that already...

Clockwork Shadow Factory:

:) hmmm... Rooks/Castles?

I have been wondering why Wilson wouldn't try building a makeshift gun. Lack of anything to make a barrel out of, perhaps, since he doesn't have access to iron. But he probably has the technical know-how, and access to gunpowder. Hmm, with access to reeds one could make something like the rockets from ancient China.
