If your running a little thin, keep in mind they're also in caves, that won't help you much unless your looking for spikes. Not sure how long the book effect lasts for. Hopefully someone else can answer that one. Also, tentacles have reproductive organs, but don't seem to reproduce. The huge tentacles found in caves either reproduce or grow back, the result usually can't be seen on the surface.
