tigbits
Okay so for the first time I have been able to make a functioning farm/base near some beefalo. 6 turbo plots, right now I have 3 for pumpkins and 3 for dragon fruit because I heard they are the best health item other then honey (which i failed at...ill mention it in a bit) and I had a Bird so I now have a ton of pumpkins for food. I tried to make a pumpkin lantern for the heck of it. the first I noticed is the durability level and how quickly it depleted. Then I noticed you get nothing back at all other then Fireflies I think. I used it at night and the light level was very dismal. In fact I resorted to just catching the fireflies nearby and placing them around my farm so I can see how they are progressing (they are slightly far from the light of the fire)So why would anyone use a pumpkin lantern rather then a moment or two of decoration and dismal lighting? losing possibly the best hunger food in the game and the finite fireflies? So in short the pumpkins feel very lack luster for what they are worth.(the fail mentioned) so this was the first time I tried to make a bee box and I found a single hive so far (have yet to explore the entire world) and what I thought is that there were normal worker bees that you need to collect for the box and when you attack the hive you summon killer bees. So i attacked the hive, killed what i thought was the killer bees. only to figure out there were no bees around and ive killed them...so now I have honey and honey comb but no bees i hope theres at least 1 more bee hive Edited December 14, 2012 by tigbits
fivebetwhale
I also think those lanterns need tweeks. I never use them, so i think this post is spot on.
501105
Although pumpkin lanterns look very spooky, they indeed cost far too much for what they offer. I made one once to see how it works, but pumpkins are just too good to waste, not to mention that fireflies can run out eventually. There should be more bee hives for you to find in the world and sometimes you can even find wandering bees without a hive.
tigbits
Thanks 501105! ill hopefully stumble across one today. What im thinking is make it last alot longer, fireflies just fly out when they deplete. Make the light level that of a low fireplace so it covers more of an area. or make it a permanent structure that required more research points and maybe two fireflies? 501105
If fireflies fly out automatically when the pumpkin is depleted and the pumpkin lasts twice as long, then I could see it working. However even then I think that a pumpkin lantern is an expensive item, it needs something unique to make it worthwhile.
tigbits
Since its spooky have it drive away Hounds and Krampus? make the "Scare area" just a little bigger then the actual area it lights. So when a hound gets too close it whimpers and runs away from it a short distance before continuing to go towards the player, while Krampus just jump and if they snatched something before they have a chance of dropping it again? that way its also situational. you start to hear grunting or hissing you make 1 or 2 near your most important things you dont want broken. Keep it the way it is now (just change it so fireflies fly out, or perhaps disappear for a set number of days before returning to where they originally came from). That way its unique, gives the person a chance to defend their base and makes it worth it.
