Multiplayer versus mode

Recommended Posts

This is the only pvp idea I've been able to come up with.

I feel that any multiplayer pvp fits some sort of balanced match (1v1, 2v2). I think it's a great way to utilize Maxwell's Door, turning the game into a race of sorts. The 'pvp' aspect would come into being able to curse the other players world to varying degrees (which is why 2v2 might work, cause it could get a bit crazy). Curses would either be crafted or dark boons could be found left by "Them", each of which could have pairs of effects to either choose or happen at random when activated.

These artifacts would either have a direct impact on their current world or influence their next world (cut their sanity for several minutes, have bigfoot walk randomly around the map, zap their inventory, perhaps even invert the game controls. Like I said, things could get crazy). However, casting a curse would also have a negative, though milder, impact on the user (following the lines of how Maxwell deteriorates as you progress through story mode).

I think it's an idea that bears consideration. It could be incredibly hard to balance, but have interesting results. There could be a cave mode instead (or perhaps a curse could force the next world to be in caves).

The combat in Don't Starve doesn't lend itself to standard pvp models, and the current traps/base defensive structures and methods of demolition don't appear to form an entertaining sabotage mode (although it sounds cool to just dance around another's home with a staff of deconstruction).

So the players who are fighting just makes the other one's life more miserable? I think it is definitely interesting, but what if I want to watch my enemy like burn alive while I eat his burnt flesh?

Edit: Also, what objects? You said boons, but boons can sometimes be awkwardly positive. So are they reconstructed items with boons or what?

Basically the idea would be either you have to craft a curse, which could be incredibly difficult, or more thoroughly search the world to find objects that allow you to curse your opponent(s).

An alternate idea would be adding hard enemies that you have to take down and if you do it allows you to curse the opponents.

The problem with burning the enemies would be along the lines of an inadequate combat system for that. Also, I think there might be a value in not knowing how your enemies are progressing, or only receiving updates of their progress as you yourself make it to another world.

Edit: essentially it would be making them miserable, but more trying to buy yourself time to make it ahead of them and, I suppose, 'take the throne'. Obviously there are likely variations. Maxwell offers a return to the normal world for the victors, the losers are taken by 'Them', perhaps Big Foot is hungry and they're trying to trip up the others so they aren't eaten (what does something that big eat anyway? the deerclops is a mere mouthful for it).

Mostly this idea is 1/2 idea, 1/2 commentary on how the attack/defense system in place is not antiquate for what people would consider "standard multiplayer"
