Instead of worrying about starving, you have to be worrying about over-eating everything, If you are near an item, it will gravitate towards you, and anything too close to you, you will unwillingly eat it. Trees and structures will also fall apart when close. Also, perhaps you can craft a muzzle, so you won't have to worry about eating your science machine.
