For hats, clothes/armor and weapons there should be something where you can put an item where they can be visually seen. Maybe each thing can hold 4 items each as to not be graphically overwhelming. Do you at least understand the downside to putting them on the ground instead of a chest, even if you lack the imagination to understand why someone would ever put a slightly damaged one with the others?
