I don't think this is intentional, but if you equip on and off a torch quickly enough, it doesn't wear out. Thought devs should know, and change it so that whenever you equip a torch it loses 1% of its durability.

So, the abuse that you're mentioning is that a player could stand around at night just RMB-clicking on the torch to equip/unequip it rapidly and the torch never wears out? That would be a bug for sure and one you should bring up.

This is totally a bug and has already been reported.

CONFIRMED You can RMB toggle your torch in and out survive the pitch black. It doesn't know to start the counter because you are swapping them too fast.
