When playing in one of my beta worlds, I pondered whether or not the new coals could be useful for dealing with the woven shadows in the AFW fight. While their damage is pretty pitiful against most mobs, for the single health point of the wovens, it'd probably be a good method for dealing with their large numbers. For this strategy, I placed coals in a ring around the portal, as most of the wovens tend to spawn in the center, and used the thermal balm to protect me from fire damage (though this isn't a problem if you're playing Willow or using Scalemail). After testing them out for a while, I can confirm that coals are a pretty solid option for the fight, though probably on the expensive side considering the amount they give per craft and the low drop chance of heat glands. Not sure if it'd be better to farm for weatherpains, though with this method you won't have to manual cast where you want the tornado to go, which would probably make the fight less of a headache. My execution also wasn't the best here. Fuelweaver is a boss I struggle with a ton, and I end up making a few mistakes.

Assuming they work pretty much identically to Winona's pure horror strike, they sound really good for long term worlds, as you can completely shut down AFW's ability to heal, which will save tons of resources in the long term.

If they can get cheaper by either reducing the gland price or giving more coals per craft, I can see this as a pretty good alternative to using weather pains or brightshade staves.

Quite a powerful method.
I wonder if Klei, after seeing this post, will give shadow creatures immunity to damage from Coals XD. I hope not.
But I would personally increase the health of woven shadows from 1 hp to 5 hp for this reason. So that they don't die immediately after spawning on Coals, but after taking 2 damage hits from Coals.
Such a change would only slightly nerf Coals. And other methods of killing these minions wouldn't suffer. Because weather pain deals 7 damage per tick. So they would still kill woven shadows on hit if they had that 4 more hp.

Could you list some other uses Coals could have?

Otherwise, I'm unsure if people would bother using them for anything else other than decorative purposes if you encourage having them nerfed.

Ehhh, I wouldn't say this is too powerful. Bear in mind that coals cost 2 heat glands, a item with about a 25% drop chance, 4 nitre, and 4 flint to craft, and you only get 4 of them per craft. In the demonstration I used 44 coals, which would entail getting 88 heat glands and 176 nitre and flint. Yeeeeeaaaahhhhh, not really all that powerful, but a decent option to consider if you don't wanna open rifts for a BS staff or farm weather pains.

Okay, you're right.

Doesn't sound right. Don't you get 4 coal per craft?

22 heat glands is still a lot of geothermite farming, either way.

This exorbitant resource cost is even less cost-effective than just making 80 gunpowder.

I can certainly see this being a pretty decent strat. Given how much wovens greatly complicate the fuelweaver fight, the ability to entirely remove them from the equation for every single kill after setup is a massive boon.

Also, you people are forgetting construction amulet/deconstruction staff strats!! Crafting the coals gives you 4 coals using 1 gland with a construction amulet, and you can profit up to three extra glands by deconstructing those coals with a staff on each of those. Given how you only need a few green gems for that (around 7 or so with construction amulet/deconstruction staffs) and you’ll pretty easily profit that amount from a single ruins regen, it is worth it’s weight in gold.

Not sure, I did this with events turned off. It probably does affect drop rates.
