Id suggest watching this video, it was all i needed to get going.

It explains very well where to find things, how to extract the files needed and how to edit them, and what to do with it when you're done being artistic so that it will show in game. It's old, but still up to date, except on one thing that i can think of - back in those days, block textures where compiled on large sheets. Nowadays, minecraft uses single images for block textures and items.If the video lacks explanatory power, just ask me and i'll write up a tutorial on how to do it. :)
