Hey everyone!

I'm very new to Don't Starve Together (1 week in), and I've grasped the absolute basics, but everything after that is pure chaos. šŸ˜‚

I'm looking for a "mentor" who can help me with things like winter, map exploration, and resource management by playing together and sharing tips.

I've been consuming all the videos, reddit posts etc. about DST, but still lack a lot so I thought maybe someone experience would benefit me, while they have fun teaching a newbie

We can communicate over Steam if possible. Let's start a world and jump into an adventure!

I reccommend you join public servers to learn the game. The game is built around playing multiplayer and learning from different players.

Ā

You can try servers called ā€œMeow Togetherā€ they are consistently active.

You will find a lot of people who would be happy to help you.

I recommend not installing any client/server mods for a long time

Its more immersive and is the best way to experience DST

Mods can remove challenge which in turn can slow how quickly you improve at the game. Its a lot better to get a feel for how things like freezing and overheating are without a mod to show your realtime temperature.

I somewhat disagree with your example about the real-time temperature display because its absence isn't so much "adding challenge" as it is "playing blind". However, I can agree with the fact that sometimes oversimplifying the game doesn't lead to the truly interesting experience that DST can offer. Personally, I don't consider mods that simply add QoL to be part of that aspect.

Indeed, servers are helping a lot.

I am not sure if I am already abusing mods. I mean none of them are changing the core features of the game, but makes it easier to play & learn that for sure. I installed 23 mods, and most of them are active. Not sure if I should go vanilla from now on tho.

Ropes can be prototyped at a Science Machine or an Alchemy Engine and require 3 Cut Grass to craft, you're welcome

There are very few quality of life mods and even fewer that people actually use. Off the top of my head the only quality of life mod with a lot of downloads is geometric placement. The vast majority of mods are to make the game easier by doing things like let you see the entire map or let you see in the dark or let you see your temperature.Ā

I learned DST with the minimap mod on, since I couldn’t, for the life of me, understand the game’s map. The minimap made it feel more like an ARPG, which I’m more used to. After I figured out how the camera and the map actually work, I removed the mod (it also made the game a bit laggy).

I think it’s fine to try out some mods, but in the long run it’s wise not to get attached to any of them as a crutch you can’t play without.
