using rifts as an excuse for a band-aid is not good design, instead night lights need inherent changes such as

-no longer gets targetted by flingos

-no longer gets targetted by night hands

-should turn itself off if there's no player to feed on and retain its fuel power for later

-should repel the scion's turf attack

-the red gem could be socketed out and be replaced by other gems for various extra effects

-the insanity aura should be a bit higher (-15) and NM fuel should be less efficient (4 to fill instead of 3)

First two ideas are good.

Only the red gems are associated with flames in Don't Starve, so the idea with different gems doesn't fit, even if considering that nightlight doesn't produce heat. And making the structure a pedestal for gems without light affect isn't good either.
