It’s not out of the question that he was mutated by the moon. But even then, in the animal world, there are often very stark and extreme differences between male and female versions of a species, most extreme one I can think of right now is angler fish. Perhaps this is normal for them.

In the divorce she got the bottle business and ck got the kids, so after all these years pearl just wants to see her children again (if you think about CK prob ain't crazy, you just walk up to him give him gems or his ex-wife pearl, then start beating him up.)

When you break his castle you can see he's actually quite small. Only a tiny bit larger than Pearl. But his shell is massive, I'd argue that is because after he found the altar he built up his defenses to protect the altar. Before the altar, his shell was probably far more reasonable sized.

As for being feral, idk. I still think the altar caused him to go crazy. The altar pieces seem to talk to all the survivors, and while we don't know what they are saying to ck, maybe it was something that convinced him to protect it. Either to keep the shiny for himself, or to protect everyone else. I don't think we'll ever know, but that's my theory. I believe he was a normal pirate kind of crab once.

Take a look at Crab King's altar compared to the others:

Notice how the other ones come to a soft, almost rounded tip near the end? Now look at Crab King's. This powerful source of pure lunar energy? Yeah, it was stabbed directly into him. If just being around the altars causes the survivors' minds to be invaded by whispers to do their bidding, can you imagine what would happen to a normal crab that had one of these things lodged through their body?
