I've had this happen in multiple games where Jawbos very, very slowly die, like losing a hp every few cycles. I  seems to happens when they're living in polluted water vent output, at least as in I have plenty of Jawbos living in other bodies of water which don't seem to very slowly die.

The mystery is I only know of 3 reasons for critters to take damage:

  • fighting other critters. But these are lonely Jawbos, and definitely no pokeshells. Also the damage is super gradual while fighting damage is pretty fast.
  • getting attacked by merciless duplicants. But this requires an attack order be issued, and inflicts damage extremely rapidly.
  • being in external temperatures outside their livable range which causes scalding damage. But the polluted water pool is very close to 30 C, smack back in their comfort range. Furthermore, when they surface, the game uses the average of the air temperature and the water temperature, to actually get an external temperature of -20 C would require an air temperature something like -50 C which is outside the bounds of plausible even for things like cold chlorine packets drifting in from a cold biome, which on prehistoric maps don't tend to be colder than -30 C or so.

This leaves my only speculation: that Jawbos are able to partially clip into the -272 C neutronium tiles of the polluted water vent floor.

This is supported by the fact that the Jawbo gets a "chilly" thought after swimming past the neutronium (this one had moved diagonally left and down). I don't think it can "hang out" clipped into the neutronium, but this clipping happens while it moves, occasionally aligning with the ticks when critters take scalding damage. Unless someone can offer a better speculation as for why the Jawbo should be taking damage I'm thinking this hypothesis is correct.

edit: After posting found this bug report:

Which previously I hadn't found because I'd been searching for "jawbo taking damage"

I haven't got the screenshots to prove it, but I swear I've seen em hang out on top of the neutronium. They gain the "Freezing" status, with the game claiming their environment is at a temperature of something like -60 if I recall? which I'm sure is the temperature of its 4 tiles averaged out.

Was observing a Jawbo on my world and it almost immediately swam into this tile, so it seems their navigation still needs some work.

Do you know why I have a 0% Metabolism for my tamed Jawbo?

It's probably not the clearest way to present that information, but Metabolism is a negative modifier on the Calories rate. A tamed, satisfied critter like what you have has a -0% modifier on Calories. If it was Tame and Glum, it would say -80%.

Ok thanks. :)
