"Nothing worlds", and how Jimbo revolutionizes them

A "nothing world", for the uninitiated, is a world where you turn off every possible thing in the world settings. Current nothing worlds were something of a nightmare with the way world settings works nowadays; you can disable world regrowth and such, something you weren't able to do before, so you couldn't even get wood outside of rare setpieces. And in all incarnations of nothing worlds, you necessarily had to play multiplayer; having multiple people pick Webber and drop eggs so that one could farm them for meat just to be able to persist in the world for more than a few days.

 

But that all changes with Jimbo!! Jimbo, a setpiece which is (currently) unable to be disabled, not only gives you a relatively safe and easy and instant access to large amounts of food (so much so that I couldn't ever hope to eat it all, when testing), but also GRASS! Grass has always been infamously difficult to get in nothing worlds, but it's easier to get than ever before. Not only does this make nothing worlds possible to play entirely solo, but you also don't even need to play Webber anymore! Which matters a lot because you can now pick Wickerbottom, and because you can get papyrus from the Moonquay island, you can craft the light book (Lux Aeterna) which causes earthquakes in caves! Cave earthquakes spawn rabbits, which means you can get beard hair and actually fight the rabbit king, which means you can even make rabbit hutches. Not to mention the prestihatitator which, as Wickerbottom, would even allow you to make tier 2 magic items if you used her Everything Encylopedia book. As far as I'm aware, there's no other way for any other character to cause earthquakes in caves in a nothing world.

 

I've been thinking about nothing worlds a lot recently, doing all sorts of testing to see what is and isn't possible in them. I do actually think it's possible for non-Webber characters to survive indefinitely on the current patch in a nothing world without use of the Jimbo machine, but you'd have to get extremely lucky; it would involve finding the pickaxe setpiece, picking some ground-twigs (and ground-gold, for later) and mining a cave entrance for stone and to make an axe and then running into one of the rare tree-spawning setpieces, and then chopping enough to make a science machine and boat kit, and then sailing to the Moonquay island fast enough to not have starved to death 30 minutes ago, and then surviving off bananas and respawning powder monkeys. Because mandrakes still spawn and there's a lot of carrots to be found in the caves, the chances of pulling this off is better than it sounds, as it greatly extends the otherwise very short time you'd have to do all of that.

 

Some bonus info for those who aren't aware, since I think this is a rather niche subject (especially nowadays):

-The reason the Moonquay island is so powerful is that you can't really turn off anything that happens there besides the portal. Bananas, trees, monkeytails and powder monkeys still spawn and operate completely normally. The ruins is very similar, almost everything there still operates as normal but it's a less desirable place for the obvious reasons.

-Spiders don't properly respawn in dens in nothing worlds. They only repopulate if a den changes level (even if it levels down via shaving). This makes surviving as Webber significantly harder than it would be otherwise.

-It's not possible to access the celestial tab at all. Meteors will never fall, so the celestial orb will never become available. All three altar pieces on the lunar island do actually spawn, but there will never be a single fissure to put them in, so you can't assemble it (there's no setpieces that involve fissures either, I checked)

-If the treeguard circle setpiece attempts to spawn, you don't get the treeguards but you still get the trees. It's kinda funny. I believe the spider queen setpiece also spawns trees without the spider dens, looking rather similar. Evil trees still spawn as normal.

-It's theoretically possible to make pig houses due to setpieces containing pigs, but you'd have to get very lucky to get enough pigskin from them.

-As there's very little use for panflutes, eating the still-spawning mandrakes is actually a really good idea, as they restore large amounts of health and hunger.

-Nothing is stopping you from killing the Ancient Fuelweaver in a nothing world. All required items and such will appear in every world. I'm not sure anyone has actually done it legitimately yet, though. I suppose I'll try to be the first.

-With the new update that changes the atrium tenta-piller, you can get lightbulbs in every world; lightflowers are a part of that setpiece.

I really, really, really want to be able to turn this thing off. I'm not going to play the game until it's possible to disable it because I don't want this thing in my worlds and nobody's made a mod that disables it yet.

It is once thing that it is a crossover. It is another that it is a forced crossover. It already doesn't feel like something from Don't Starve because I know it is from Balatro. Can't just ignore something you already know.

couldn't you just remove with debug commands once you load into your world? I really doubt it would try to retrofit a second  time

So? I too am a PC user, but just because 2 PC people want something to be a togglable option in the world generation doesn't mean non-PC players who feels the same way (surely they exist) have to suffer with it.

Why is this such a big deal to you?? DST is such a weird game: Weird as in Anyone who joins the game with a skin you do not own can literally go around changing the look of structures and items all throughout your world.

Honestly JIMBO fits the theme of the game more than a freaking gigantic Carrat Rat or Decorated blinking Christmas tree house for Bunnymen.

Then there’s the other things that can be reskinned too like the Pet Den, and the Wormholes, or “insert any other thing that has a skin here”

Unless this spawned in the middle of one of your Mega Bases & you didn’t want it there I don’t think it’s that big a deal.

What IS a colossally bigger deal however: Is that in some states it is actually illegal to gamble and in those states, games like GTA Online keep things like the interior to the Casino from being accessible to those players.

There are many permanent set pieces in the game (junk pile, pig king, magma pools) why is this such a big deal?

I believe they just haven't had time to add an option for this yet, but it should still exist later.

so my facination with nothing worlds kind of ebbed off around the time lunar grotto was introduced so i havent actually thought about all the things that could make surviving in one more viable than it used to be. for sure though it does make me feel a bit nostalgic for the challenge i hosted a couple years back. there was this woodie player who actually got a base set up by the end XD

Jeez folks, this was not ever intended as a thread to bash Jimbo. This is a thread primarily about nothing worlds, and the interaction that Jimbo has with them. Please take arguments about whether or not you think Jimbo is a good feature to one of the many threads dedicated to the topic.

With it's current implementation, it doesn't look like they were planning on it; I'm pretty sure it exists as a setpiece, and those can't be turned off.

Your experience seems to reflect that of the larger community, as they kinda died off as a topic after OrangE stopped making videos about them. I haven't really seen anyone talk about nothing worlds for years.

funny you should say that! i was introduced to orangE around that time though that isnt where i got the idea. the forum was on some idea or another about playing the game a specific way and i did that thing i do rarely where i offer a reward for playing an actually -difficult- game. as expected the "get gud" players didn't show up because of course they wouldn't show up to anything actually strenuous but a few people actually did try and one stood head and shoulders over everyone else for ingenuity and game-knowledge x''D

I want what Klei makes originally. I don't want what someone else made in the style of Klei.

Dead Cells had a ton of crossovers and I hated them all because it was heavy inspiration not something original or light inspiration.

It's one thing to make cards in DST. It's another to take the essence of something else and repaint it. It's one of the many reasons why Disney Live Action movies suck. They have the essence of the original with none of the personality. It is cheap and I hate it.

I guess that’s your point of view, and it’s a pretty weird outlook on life. But have you ever considered that maybe it isn’t there for you? Maybe it’s there for people who are fans of both franchises?

Like take me for example I love Default Standard Minecraft, but at the exact same time- I also love Sonic the Hedgehog, TMNT, Batman & Ben 10 so when those DLCs were added to Minecraft I got to enjoy TWO of my favorite things in one package.

For people who do not like crossovers, games like Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe or Marvel Vs Capcom would never have been made.

perhaps in the future Klei will add a world Gen toggle for you to remove it from your own personal worlds, but just be aware that by doing that your only cheating players out of content that fans of both DST & Baltaro would enjoy.

As for me personally: I enjoyed playing Baltaro but I couldn’t play both DST AND Baltaro at the same time, so having a playable version of it in DST lets me enjoy Baltaro.. while also still dealing with all the DST hazards and threats that Baltaro doesn’t have (aka you can still freeze or starve to death while playing if you don’t pay attention to that stuff) then Jimbo rewards poor hands with a swarm of bees or spiders

A players Inventory in DST is still very much present when playing DSTxBalatro mini game, & if your playing as Walter getting hit once causes negative sanity drain to start unless you heal your health core back to max values again.

None of this would be possible if I were to play the actual game of Balatro.

So to me: I appreciate being able to deal with DST problems and situations, while at the same exact time, also enjoying a round of Balatro.

Same thing with Minecraft DLC: I enjoy being able to run around collecting rings and listening to iconic spring sounds of Sonic, while that’s presented to me in the blocky style of Minecraft.

And on that note: Klei I’d pay any price you guys want for a DST x Minecraft.

Yeah, that's fine. But make it like the other Crossover stuff and let me disable it. I can disable the Terrarium from appearing in my world in the World Creation. If I fish up the CotL crown I can give it to the Pig King for Gold instead of Antlion for Blueprints. I can't disable the Jimbo Machine in World Settings, nor can I destroy it with a hammer. Just let me remove it forever in my world and I'd be satisfied. Same goes with the Florid Postern/Celestial Portal. If I could just have it not exist in my world I'd be a happy camper.

Wicker can craft tier 2 magic items with a science machine (or alchemy engine/bookcase) without a presti.

Very excited about the new possibilities on nothing worlds with Jimbo.
