WALTERS, MAKE YOUR BASE WITH TREE AREAS

Recommended Posts

I have noticed that this is a perk from Walter's basekit that is pretty ignored and underrated, and since I main him, and many people will start playing him now thanks to the skill tree, I want to throw an advice that I think will be really helpful for many.

Im talking about the "tree sanity" passive ability. With this, Walter gains almost as much sanity as wearing a Tam o' Shanter, and it also negates the sanity lost per missing health by half.

This perk may seem "useless" or lame, but the value you can get out of using it is insane. Its 0 upkeep, a constant sanity buff without having to keep a tam o shanter, and this works with any type of trees (be it pines, birchnuts, palmcone trees, mushtrees, and even twiggy trees), and you can also do this anywhere (not only in your base, but also farms, ruins, sanity station, boss spawns, etc). There are times that thanks to this you go entire seasons forgetting that sanity is a thing.

And im even putting an example of this. Im a horrible builder so dont judge lol,  im sure theres more efficient and prettier layouts, but this was my humble "kitchen area" on a run I made during Halloween. Theres way too many trees, you only need like 5 for the sanity to kick in, but right here I was getting sanity all the time, around the entire area, while doing cooking stuff, which is a big part of the game. Again, you can do this anywhere, you only need some tree seeds.

Now, to make it more related to the beta, I think that a way to make this more noticeable for the player would be pretty good. Like maybe a "tree icon" that appears on the sanity bar, which would also work as a way to "measure" exactly where the buff applies, since right now you can only tell when its on either by having missing sanity, or knowing beforehand whats the area of effect.

love the idea. i've always praised walter's base kit, especially his tree-loving perk. there are times when i get hit on day 1-2 for 50-100 sanity, for most players/survivors, that would be awful. but walter can just walk around a pine forest, which i'm already doing anyway since i'm exploring, and gain those sanity back. he doesn't suffer from dusk/night sanity drain either.

also, i think the range for tree-loving is 2.5 tiles, can't remember where i got the number from, but yah

Do fig trees work, or do I have to use evergreens?

You need about 5 trees packed closely together to benefit, but apart from that requirement, all types of trees should be fine except the petrified ones.

Re:how this connects to the beta: I don't think we need a tree icon since the effect is pretty noticeable by itself.
