Question: what about using Ocean Trawlers? Pearl now gives you 3 fish food for each bottle when 8 friendship points are reached, I kinda feel like those could be easily used to get heavy fish with the trawlers, and if one's lucky enough, you could even spawn a heavy fallounder in the swell ocean next to her island. (I really, really despise fishing from the bottom of my heart, that seems like a usable workaround.)

I've used wicker and a couple ocean trawlers on a river to get all my heavy fish before.

You just need a couple of her fish books. You can set it up so the fish just get stuck on the trawlers, for a 100% catch rate.

By this, do you mean "standing" basically right on top of the fish with your boat, and instantly catching them as you throw in your hook?

you don't need to move your boat towards them, you can simply abuse the reel bonus by holding M2 which spams it for you while standing as close to the water as possible
