Some Walter "Camping skill" ideas

Recommended Posts

Master Camper - Walter may craft a [Camping crockpot] and a [Portable drying rack].

- Camping crockpot -

May be placed on a campfire, has to be opened with right click.

You may cook crockpot food on it, with cooking speed increasing drastically depending on fire size.

Placing it on an endothermic fire makes it cook food slower depending on fire strength, but guarantees a full freshness meal.

If a regular campfire is put out then the camping crockpot will be dropped.

Can only be removed from a fire pit and endothermic fire pit via hammer.

- Portable drying rack -

A kit, which can stack up to 3.

Its a very tiny drying rack, which dries food faster. Walter may also make an upgraded version with salt, which dries the food even faster.

while i think a camping crockpot might hit a little too hard on Warly. A new type of drying rack with more space? Sign me up! I do like the idea of having it placed over a campfire

Its to pair well with his stories while the food is cooking, plus with faster speed and a lot of fuel you can make meals quick on the spot in a ruins rush or smth using the bananas from monkeys.

While I think the camping crockpot can be left alone and given to Warly (since that is his domain anyway), I fully support the portable drying rack idea, especially now that the skill tree is incentivizing Walter's mobile gameplay more than ever before (and that Woby is becoming a more viable long-term companion/follower for him, both big and small). Regular jerky is a very good food item for Walter, and monster jerky lasts longer than raw/cooked monster meat, meaning you can stockpile more monster jerky for Woby when you need her to get big. That's gonna be really helpful particularly in early to midgame (and ngl I think even in late game as well).

Cool proposal, but how about this:

Campcooker: Walter can cook crockpot dishes on any firepit, just rightclick on campfire to add the ingridients. If fire was extinguished before cooking was has finished. coocked ingridiends will be left on the ground (raw if there's no cooked version).

Forest survivor: Walter can use any tree as a drying rack. if someone destroys the tree, food drop is the same as if someone would destroy drying rack. No food for burned tree.

that sounds like the same thing but with extra steps and feels odd, would also prevent other players from using it.

actually the fire pit crockpot makes a lot of sense the only thing that would slightly concern me is how it would work with story telling  when all the key binds being used already, but thats a technical issue that I am sure could be circumvented. Makes sense and I can dig it. Also please for the portable drying rack, possibly with multiple slots

wouldnt fire pit crockpot be something you have to carry around? just drag it onto  fire pit to upgrade it

portable drying racks have been brought up a few times and personally i would be keen. a rack that folds up when there is nothing on it would be useful for a semi-nomadic walter especially in caves where meat can get scarce and has to be doled out carefully

Though I sound like a broken record I feel like the drying rack hat idea from uncomp would fit better with his character. Which works by him wearing a piece of meat hanging from the hat and the meat would dry out based on how fast the player moved. It really fit with Walter's on the move playstyle is while giving a great sanity management tool.

yes, but he already has a hat to manage sanity, the pinetree pioneer hat.

His hat completely conflicts with his gameplay at this point he needs the void hat to get the max effectiveness of his gear and planar attacks makes using the hat useless. Besides people still have issues with sanity and this would be great for making monster jerky as well.

It's a skill that ties into his mechanics and solves 2 issues in one skill while being very useful for beginners and veterans

The crockpot idea is pretty good, but I dont think this would be useful, rather than having a portable drying rack I would prefer something like Walter himself gaining more stats from eating jerky. And upgrading basic drying racks with salt + ropes or something like that, you could have like 10 upgraded drying racks at base and that should be more than enough to get jerky on stacks, specially if like, the upgrade were to make it so you can dry more food at once, takes less time, etc

Honestly the only thing i want personally apart from camping skills, and this isn't even related to the skill tree itself, but something that has always bothered me a bit is just how loud Walter is when he is telling scary stories around the campfire. You'd think you would lower your voice for extra spooky factor but nope not this kid. They did it with Wendy's whispering into the flower, i'd hope they could do the same and give him quiet musical notes.

I mean if it takes more time to make a upgraded drying racks by making you use salt doesn't that sort of defeat the purpose? I feel like a mobile drying rack would work better for him since you'd be able to dry food as you travel.

Give him more campfire stories and a skill that increases how much sanity he gives from them, as well as other perks that deal with his tree thing, like something that lets him get more heat insulation and rain protection from them or dry off faster underneath them or something. Maybe a new skill that allows him to make exotic varieties of- or customize his pioneer hat, like adding a light to it, giving it weather protection, or being a discount horizon expandinator.

Whatever skills they add should change his already existing other perks, really.

Edit: Another idea is to make his portable tent more useful. Skills to increase the healing he gets from them and reduce the amount of hunger he loses when sleeping, making it so he can set it up as a portable lean-to in the summer, and actively making him warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. This would encourage him to actually take his portable tent with him, and give it multiple uses for the environment and combat recovery.
