With the addition of planar mechanics plus the ammount of new gear that bloats the game, there is a weapon that suffered more from this new progression.

The shield of terror

Spoiler

was a good thing to have to save on weapon and armor, it even allowed interesting configurations like CC crown, shield and magi. It was better if you planned to play for long in the world because in late you could just bring the shield for the hound/worms waves and repair it with the meat they drop which saved inventory and materials.

Now isn't worth to fight the twins when you are going to ditch the shield some days later when you get the cheap, reparaible, top damage planar weapon of choice. Is better to go throw the main content with hambats and dark swords,  anyways, you wont waste that much before you get the planar economy breaking weapons.

A solution could be to add a way to enhance regular weapons to deal planar damage

The sea wad added many years ago at this point and there are stuff that are still useless despite people's feedback and other stuff became useless.

The cookie cutter cap

Spoiler

Is a fun looking, cheap armor that could be useful if wasnt because pig skin is plentiful and eye of terror and daywalker exists. Sure, you can say that is good for crowded servers filled with new players and this wouldnt be a problem if wasnt because cookie cutters drop too much shells and this item isnt use in anything other than this bad helmets and fishing equipment.

There is a problem with the shells and the fishing equipment,  they became obsolet even before being used. You dont have any reason to use the prototyping lure machine neither to craft them when you can get with few treasures more fishing equipment you will ever waste

Shells wither need new recipes, fishing equipment needs to be removed from treasure and cookie cutters needs a perk to be appealing

Rabbit king cudgel..

Spoiler

Self-explanatory...klei added the most pointless miniboss in the game, almost at the level of the twins in terms of "unnecessariless". People's feedback asked for buffs and they simply changed a little the durability...125 uses...

Why they think someone is gonna fight this guy just to get a weapon that is worst than a hambat?

The scaring bunnymen perk is beyond niche.

They either raise the durability to like 600 or add to it the perk of summon the storage burrow so is a weapon with utility (and people would fight him if they dont wanna trade with the benevolent counter part)

Once again, tails o' three cats

Spoiler

A low damage middle range weapon with a chance of making mobs lose aggro...you need to hit multiple times just for a chance of stopping them attacking you... i simply dont get it.

Funny they 'listen' to the feedback of years saying this wasnearly useless (outside of few niche uses related to mob's AI oversights)  and reduced the expensive cost it had but 0 changes to the weapon itself so is still useless

It needs a rework

Glass cutter

Spoiler

They are kinda useful to defeat shadow bosses if for some reason you craft them. Before rifts atleast you have the option to use them since you unlock the ability to craft them with the moon orb.

Now when you unlock that ability is when they become the less useful. Is sad to see how content isnt planned ahead and just improvised. This little thing is just a sample of all these years updates

And there are more stuff like this. Old stuff problem is whatever but when you see stuff like the shield of terror or the glass cutter progression you lose the faith of the route the game is taking since, if content were released with a clear vision and plan, these things wouldnt happen

I have Klaus kill the Twins for me in the first winter and then I use the Shield of Terror until I get rift gear, which takes about two game years for me to get around to doing. I think the Shield of Terror does its job and earns its retirement.

I also love using the tails o' three cats to do the moonstorm missions as any character solo.

To be honest, I'd love it if older things get some more love for the newer crafts. Like yeah sure the slimy salve can just stand as its own thing without needing the OG healing salve, but that's a decent upgrade of a relatively cheap item as players got into shadow rifts for the first time; giving some protection from the acid rain until they get the Umbralla.

Really, my biggest gripe with the shield of terror is how awful the durability is. I love the shield concept and have tried using it quite a bit, but it just never really clicks with me with how easy it can be for the item to break. If people think the maul is bad, You have to constantly micromanage its durability because any decent hit will rip chunks of its durability out.

I like the gimmick of the item breaking and don’t really want that changed, I just wish the shield was more on par with something like the wigfrid helms durability compared to a football helm (525 vs. 315). You would still need to manage the durability, but at least it would not be as unforgiving.

On the topic of planar, I will admit the shield does suffer a lot more compared to other weapons since you are right that it’s almost immediately swapped. I myself wish the twins were a planar boss so the shield could be a planar weapon, since apart from the fact that it would also fit Terraria more for the twins to be a post planar boss (among other things in general….), it would help increase the longevity of the weapon.

Glass cutter

I personally use the glass cutter quite a bit for the raid boss arenas. Because you will effectively have infinite moon shards + boards are easy enough to amass, it becomes very easy to spam dozens of cutters to leave in a place and pick up at a moment’s notice. Since planar weapons don’t scale as much from planar weapons while items like the cutter/dark sword do, it makes it more appealing to use those options then it does to use the rift gear, even with the helmet effect.

The biggest problem with the cutter is in general a lot of the problems with non-prototypable weapons: they are just really, really impractical to craft on demand and the cutter having the worst durability if not used on non-shadow enemies does not help at all with this. This sucks especially for caves, because there is literally no way to craft them down there and you have to lug glass cutters all the way down and into places you wish to use them This is especially relevant when things like dark swords are on a similar tier in terms of resource accessibility and are prototypable.

I feel they're ok if i'm honest.

In each playthrough there's a chance i'll use each of these, the twins.... erm, maybe, maybe not, depends if i want to use the twins to do a bit toward bee queen or not. Cookie Cutter Cap I tend to never end up using, it's nice when you're doing stuff on the sea if a helmet breaks or something, I think the item itself is a bit meh as opposed to it being outclassed from progression. (Not tails o' three cats).

I do see what you mean though, depending on how I do things, I might end up letting the Eye Mask go pretty quickly after i've got it when I get the dreadstone stuff, but sometimes I might not do Werepig as early as the other bosses, so it'll stay for a while.

I personally use the Shield of Terror as my main weapon and try to kill the Twins early in the first winter or sooner, but I do agree that it could use a buff. At bare minimum, it shouldn't fully break when it reaches 0%. I would like to see a damage increase to make it match a fresh ham bat too, but I'll settle for it just not breaking.

Just buffs the cap to 80 percent and it's pretty good. Maybe give it an ale

Glass cutters aren't that bad honestly

I do use them, what I do is rush lunar island (around day 12) and craft around 9 of them and bring them back. Due to low durability I don't like bringing them to boss fights, but they are great for day to day fights. I never craft more afterwards though.

They arent completely useless but honestly(and i dont want to push any way of playing, just play as you have the most fun), glass cutters cant compete in late when they are more avaraible neither they can compete in early when you can achieve more by going to the ruins and get clubs along with other ruins gear.

Maybe rushing them would be more appealing if the moon crafting tab had more items, but glass axes+glass cutters vs going to the ruins to get clubs, thulecite armor, Green and yellow staves, AG loot, werepig armor, moggles, mushgnomes for living logs....

I do craft some when i visit the island to set the altars but only because of their bigges upside, being almost free

Cookie caps were fixed when klei dramatically increased the pieces drop rate

I already acknowledged this in OP. Grass suits are cheap but nobody uses them. This is the same, why would you go sailing when you have 2 early game reparaible helmets and 1 cheap early helmet on land plus thulecite crowns? There is only 1 scenario where this item is useful

Glasscutter is perfectly fine.

I dont see anything fine about them

Shield is just really low durability considering it needs to be a weapon too. I wouldnt mind something to make it more useful.

(glass) cutters I like with the burrowing horn extra inventory. Rift stuff makes them obsolete but thats the fate of a lot of weapons as you say. I think they’re okay but it is true theyre probably craft once a game or never.

(cookie) cutters i don’t believe i’ve ever seriously used. i love the idea, but it’s too much of a pain to go out regularly at all to get more, and treasure doesnt really give enough to mass produce. i don’t think it’s a stat problem so I don’t think it’s fixable. Then again, making them fixable at 0 durability might do it. Kind of a way to onboard players to repair kits.

Hugely agree on this. The glass cutter should be prototypable from celestial orb after defeating celestial champion. It's a shame that it is most effective in the ruins but cannot be made anywhere in caves.

After defeating CC you have access to the BS sword so it wont matter

It would be very easy for klei to fix most of these old items, would mostly just require changing one line on tuning.lua. They have always been very conservative about balance changes, for some reason, though I am glad not too much changes when I stop playing
