Wortox balance is off.

Recommended Posts

I've mentioned it a few times in other posts, but controller support for wortox is very limiting. With the current controls, we can not teleport in place, this effects his ability to kite, along with both affinity skills. His teleport distance is limited to a smaller area, and his teleporting control is based on what direction he is moving. This changes the effectiveness of souls pierce.

When you have such a difference in controls, balancing for PC only results in a significantly weaker character on the majority of platforms. Please address this problem.

Just commenting on this because it needs to be seen and addressed. I am primarily a Switch player and I just got the PC version just to even play around with Wortox. He is indeed really fun to play with his new skilltree but he will be almost impossible to utilize on any console. I would suggest at least porting Winona's remote control mechanic to Wortox (the ability to adjust the distance of TP). This way if we need short hops for dodging we can simply do that. Maybe have an "auto tp" on or off option in the controller settings.

If I am greatly satisfied with the latest reworks on Wortox's skill tree, I still agree that the controller support is quite annoying at best most of the time... It could definitely use some love.
The alt action being the same as for soul echoes has been a bit of pain for years now :/

Honestly, controller issues are not uncommon for this game. Steam Deck version is not the best experience either. Native Steam Deck version has no MnK layout selectable, and keybinds for controller are all black/white (I really dislike, why they did this with Steam Deck) unlike colorful Xbox/Nintendo icons. While Unravel and Talent tree buttons are binded to the same button during character selection screen... Meanwhile Linux version has MnK support, but ALWAYS selects Controller as default, so each time you pass the loading screen you must go to settings and change it.

To whoever is playing via Steam Deck like me, here is my tip for how to play Steam deck version with MnK without controller annoyance:

Spoiler
  • Step 1: Set your game to Linux Runtime
  • Step 2: Do not start the game, but open Konsole in desktop mode and type these to disable controller:
    echo "3-3:1.0" | sudo tee /sys/bus/usb/drivers/usbhid/unbind
    echo "3-3:1.1" | sudo tee /sys/bus/usb/drivers/usbhid/unbind
    echo "3-3:1.2" | sudo tee /sys/bus/usb/drivers/usbhid/unbind
  • Step 3: Start the game, once it's loads make sure to re-enable controller via:
    echo "3-3:1.0" | sudo tee /sys/bus/usb/drivers/usbhid/bind
    echo "3-3:1.1" | sudo tee /sys/bus/usb/drivers/usbhid/bind
    echo "3-3:1.2" | sudo tee /sys/bus/usb/drivers/usbhid/bind
  • Step 4: Enjoy Steam Deck Desktop without controller.

This will work until you close down the game. I dont risk permanently disabling controller, which is why I re-enable it the moment game loads.

Agreed. It doesn't have to be fancy. Just allow us to TP instead of kite, I mean this has been a strategy for Wortox players since the get go.

What if the more you hold the buttom futher you teleport? In that way you can do quick teleportations while fighting and have the option to tp long distances outside of combat

I think that would fix most of it. The control for soul pierce might suffer more though. As is, we can add a third point to circle giants, but if it's a slower charge it could make it harder to outrun the souls. It would make his kiting and affinity skills viable though

What if you could move Wortox´s cursor in the same way you can move Terraria´s smart cursor using the left analog stick. By default your cursor would be right on Wortox if you are not tilting the stick to move, so pressing B would teleport you in place, and tilting the stick would move the cursor in that direction, with the distance being decided by how much you tilt the stick. So if you want to teleport a small distance you tilt the stick a little, and max distance (the screen´s edges) is tilting the stick to max. The only problem I see is that you would still have to walk in the direction you wanna tp to, but if the cursor doesn´t lag behind your stick´s placement (just like in Terraria) I think you could still turn it around fast enough without walking too much in an undesired direction and then quickly teleport.
I don´t know if videos are allowed here, but I see there is an option to attach files to these comments so I´ll try to upload an example of Terraria´s smart cursor movement (might be loud though). Also, you should probably not implement the little deadzone that Terraria has for walking by default since you´ll still want to be able to move immediately after tilting the stick when kiting, but instead have it as an option where you can decide how much you have to tilt the stick to start walking if you prefer that (probably better represented in settings as a radius around your character where cursor movement wont affect character movement).

There’s a lot of things Klei designs with KB and Mouse in mind first & then poorly ported or not even supported for a console controller.

The new Craft UI (which is pretty old by now..) for example was clearly designed with PC players in mind.

anything ocean or boat related..

Wortox abilities etc.. the game just isn’t being designed with console players in mind.

I’ve suggested for YEARS the ability to hold in Y for 3-4 seconds (the inspect button for Xbox) to pull up a virtual on screen mouse to do things such as..

choose what direction & how far we want to soul hop.

But sadly it seems that it’s low on Klei’s list of priorities to implement.

Terraria's toggle for the cursor was actually where I based my recommendation for control changes on the other post. It's not my favorite game, but it solved this issue perfectly.

Yeah, it's honestly pretty scummy to alienate so maybe people. Especially with wortox right now. They're basing and balancing skills on a maneuver that console players don't have. I hate this.

On console, even if you run around in a little circle before you teleport, by the time it registers the button input, your visual indicator snaps back to max distance. It's a broken piece of the game that they've been ignoring for year, and they charge you extra for the pleasure of it all.

@JesseB_Klei I've been told that you guys have a team for console qol, but I'm not sure if that's accurate or not. Would you be able to load the game up on a console to experience the differences between the soul hop? Testing reveals the problems pretty quickly. If you're able to communicate with someone who could address this, it would go a long way
