Choice of island for a Walter "challenge" run

Recommended Posts

Hello! Islands huh...
Pretty simple and surely normal goal here, I have a couple characters set out that I want to complete a 100 day world on, namely while basing somewhere unconventional. Probably not multiplayer, since I ain't convincing anyone to tag along for this.

For one of these characters: Walter, I plan on limiting myself to basing somewhere that's an island. Doesn't mean at sea, but just somewhere like Moon Quay, Lunar Island, or Pearl. I'm not living there, just making it my base (buildings, farms etc.), so it's completely fair game to leave and gather anywhere mainland etc. Anyone have experience basing at any of those places, or even basing there as Walter? It's definitely a gimmick, but I'm eager to hear any suggestions for which island to prioritize, and subsequently some completely foreseen difficulties of living there.
Deal with lunacy, monkeys, or Pearl..? It's probably wherever I can build docks.

I've been enjoying the Lunar Island base I've been playing recently a LOT! I based on the smaller islands and connected them with docks, which keeps the feeling of living out at sea while also allowing room to section off multiple farms and builds and such. The gestalts are pretty obnoxious until you get an enlightened crown (so if you go for rifts at all, definitely go for lunar ones first over shadow), but you can chug raw meat/expired food for extended stays and it'll be fine. In my opinion it's very worth putting up with in exchange for no Deerclops spawns, Bearger can't reach you, Hounds drop a lot more loot since some of them turn into Horror Hounds, Insanity just doesn't exist, and you've got so much room around your base for above average trees. Also, once you kill Crab King, you can put his bumpers on your boat, and just go full speed to the mainland every time you need to go there without even needing to worry about lowering your sails and docking slowly, since the bumpers don't take damage when colliding with land. This is a bit messy, but yeah, there's my lunar island thoughts!

Ha! Super helpful! Funnily enough, losing sanity is something Walter is gonna be pretty good at. If I can set my boat to autopilot to the mainland with Crab King's bumpers, that's the perfect time to get in some tent sleeping and recover my (likely low) sanity too!

It'd be real hard to quarantine Moon Quay, and Pearl really doesn't have the room for a roommate (unless you can dock there), so the Lunar Archipelago seems like a keeper! Thanks for the tips, and love the pfp by the way!

Minor Edit: Anyone know if Walter gets his sanity regen from Above-Average Trees? Doubt I'll be near enough trees to matter, but kinda a curiosity question now.

so i have a little experience basing at pearl's and the moon quay, as far as pearl goes it is only a problem in spring since you have to fuss with her bees(unless you wanna wreck 'em up of course) so that is annoying but aside from that she is a great spot for an island AND you get to have the company of a cute lil' granny, quay is a bit harder sine you will need to clear out the huts right away which means getting cave bananas early so you can undo the inevitable transformation or just living a simmian simulation for a while until the island bananas grow in then clearing trinkets, you will need to figure out what you will need to do about the rift as well since left in its default state it will infrequently send out powder monkeys which will loot whatever they can get to. you either need to block it off or make an auto-killing set-up or turn them off in settings if you want your things left alone. both islands are going to be prone to pirate raids when you touch a boat(an inevitability since i have never generated a standard-sized world where i could get the docks to make it to the mainland) so you will also need to figure out if you are going to invest in creation & repair of boat bridges or if you want to have a sailable boat OR if you want to load up on those boot teleports and do the maths on setting that up. you also need to figure out if you are going to set up a decoy boat for triggering the raid away from your actual means of escape from the island or as a means of farming(a boat full of trapped pigmen is pretty good for this),

sorry if this is muddled, i am not the most articulate XD

Okay, after some testing on the Lunar Island, here's how Walter is affected by it.

Does anyone know if Walter is immune to the enlightenment aura of the lunar island?

Yep! Or, kinda. Walter doesn't suffer the ambient 0.625san/min during day, but DOES suffer the sanity from celestial fissures. So stay clear and you can keep your sanity gain pretty low. Additionally, and probably obviously, Walter's +6san/min passive when surrounded by five or more trees triggers on Lune Trees, so you'd have to pay that mind too. Final thing, and kinda irrelevant cause how would you even trigger this, Above-Average Tree (trunks) don't trigger Walter's tree passive. So no worries about gaining enlightenment (I love calling it lunacy) while in the shade.

Same story here! How am I supposed to show my face to her after I broke the pearl. Seems like a nice place to stay, especially for the good company, decent space (with docks), and proximity to land/lunar. No matter which island I stay at, it'll be worth the boat bridge.

Edit/update: Funnily enough the spring bees could end up being a pretty big problem for Walter. Sorry bees, but it's you or me...

On an addition note, you could live with Frostjaw... THAT place is a dump though, not even the right water to get some docks down...

Moon Quay is still on the table, but I'd DEFINITLEY want multiplayer for demolishing/quarantining that place. Doubt my usual crew would be interested in 100 watery Walter days, so tentative invite here... Oh, and thanks for the Moon Quay tips! I imagine dealing with the raids will be pretty intrusive, but alas, island life.

Interesting, he's immune to nightmare lights as well as darkness drain, but not the fissures, I wonder why

No worries haha, some boat here :apathy:

I'm infrequently available past 8:00pm Eastern during the week, and usually around on the weekends. Been on the forums so much because it's fall break for me

i might cant say much about walter but i base in lunar island, in early game i can say whole base resources was in boat lol.. for food i can gather alot of monster meat from cookie cutter even better if u can go/relocate some seaweed for bernacle and change em into eggs..
eggs with kelp and twig for breakfast skillet is my main dish in whole early gameplay its cheap quite filling and get healing properties. while last long (if im not wrong it last as much as bacon and egg)

that was my whole chest area cus many of stuff was tucked in my ship.

i can say this run of basing in lunar and full time pirate is so much fun XD
sunken chest give me thule and gem tree so i dont need a repetitive fight resetting ruins every summer ..
since this public server we decided to make several base and trade resources from each other and i kinda be their limited sea item travelling merchant

try to sail instead of making bridges . it cost so much wood and doesnt look good also restrict u when u finally decided on sailing for sunken chest .. cus u need make round about the bridge u made

I’d like to add a small tip I learned from my experience living at moon island, if you don’t kill celestial before the first summer, you can install lazy deserters and touch them in quick succession, that is, when you click on it keep holding the mouse button and your character will keep touching and releasing the deserter much faster than if you did manually.

It lowers your sanity to zero in like 2 seconds and once you have those things installed in the places you spend more time at, it’s free.

Yeah lol, I had "challenge" in quotations since really the point was to try a new character, and base somewhere unconventional to spice it up. Glad to hear Walter makes the most out of islands! I've got the same plan set out for other characters too, but I've set aside the more difficult biomes for characters I know better (Like Wickerbottom in the Labyrinth, look forward to that thread), and saved the more casual, objectively enjoyable ones for characters I haven't played, like Oasis Winona or Island Walter. It's gonna be a fun playthrough with plenty of use of Walter's skills! (horn + piggyback + chester + woby, im taking the whole mainland with me)

Well after reading about the ice island, it looks like it STRAIGHT UP DISAPEARS after you punk on Frostjaw, so no chance of roommates.
Now there's TWO thing I can do with this information... I can not base at the ice island (sane choice), or punt him so many times the island respawns exactly where I want it.
Given that twenty days is the respawn time, probably not, at least in my 100 day timeframe, though I could always just, not fight Frostjaw and the island stays just fine.
So I'm sure absolutely nothing will go wrong, especially during a hound wave.

In my current world I've been playing about a thousand days, there's only three valid spots for the ice floe... would anyone happen to know the mechanics behind it? Maybe sea stacks are blocking it everywhere else? But it pretty much always spawns right at the same spot by the Lunar Island for me every 20 days.

the only thing i have really noticed is that it only spawns in waters that you cannot run a dock through

we should get together and talk about a good time based on that ^^

Yeah! Let me know a time today and we can try and meet up. Are you the kind of person who plans before the playthrough or jumps right in?

I actually plan on doing some testing for that, but I'll be putting my findings in a whole new thread... as for this one, I think I got all my questions answered! So I'll be closing it in a day or two.

i do both but i mostly play with newbies so i skew towards just jumping in. i think though you needed help clearing out and setting up though, correct?

Yep, just about. I'll probably try to settle AS MANY ISLANDS AS I CAN, since 100 days is quite a lot of time, so even if I don't live at Moon Quay I'll wanna get to it at some point. If you just wanna hop in and get down to some normal, non-monkey extermination related don't starve shenanigans though, let me know! :adoration:

I should be pretty much free tomorrow (Saturday), so whatever time you'd like should work for me. If you don't want to talk on the forums either, let me know and I can reach out through something else too. Cheers! Oh, and no obligations if you'd rather not play. :encouragement:
