Character updates have always been the best and most exciting updates to me.

Whether that is reworks or skilltrees.

The character we choose shapes our entire playthrough. People forget, we repeat/restart the world of DST so often that characters have a massive impact on gameplay.

I like all three, with content and skill trees being more or less tied for first. But since most of the recent content updates have been for the late game and I haven’t been able to experience them yet, I have to give the point to skill trees. They’ve had the biggest impact on my gameplay, and it’s been surprisingly fun to test out different builds!

Oh god Heaven help us all, I never in my life thought I’d see a DST poll on content players enjoyed most having skill trees being voted on.

I mean that’s just.. it’s not Dont starve, it was never Dont starve, it was never going to BE Dont Starve and when they got added the game felt more MMO RPG’ish

I’m pretty sure most veteran DS players (if any of them still linger around that is) would vote for huge expansion sized quality updates like Shipwrecked and Hamlet, or maybe even new modes like Forge and Gorge. Tis a Sad Day :wilsondisappointed:

I've been playing since 2015, if you count that asa  veteran. The Forge was a complete mess and while I love the Gorge it came at the expense of like a year's worth of no updates, so I wouldn't consider them favorites at all. And DLCs like Shipwrecked and Hamlet were definitely VERY substantial in quantity (and I look back on my years with them fondly) but were outdone in quality by most any Return of Them update (not to say that SW or Hamlet are BAD, just that any given update to DST since like 2019 has been far better in my eyes). I voted for "content" because the poll options are vague, I would count the last update to the game as content due to otters and exotic trees, while I think others might consider it QoL due to mostly touching old stuff, but yeah.

Biome Content > Skill Trees > Other Content > QOL

Content updates, specifically new biomes, are by far the best type of updates IMO. They're by far the most accessible type of new content and modern biomes like Waterlogged and the lunar forest are diverse in design and content. Not only that, but it gives opportunities for new setpieces, mob designs and more without being constrained to what would work within existing biomes.

Skill trees have given me motivation to Learn new characters, and have made me a big fan of Willow & Woodie, but they're not guaranteed to do so, and for character's with low impact skill trees that I don't enjoy playing, like Wolfgang and Wurt, the update holds extremely limited appeal. That said, the highs are really high, as Willow's new fire mechanics are incredibly fun to play with, and the QOL of Woodies perks makes him much less frustrating to play.

General content is nice, But for a lot of updates it's a bit unfocused for my tastes. Rather than totally overhauling one section of the game, a lot of sections get some improvements. It's nice, but isn't exciting in the same way the previous two options are, as comparatively little of it is game-changing, and is more "Oh cool" than "Oh wow"

QOL is Nice, but in a choice between them I'd basically never take it. The game generally already has a lot of QOL stuff, and while admittedly it could always be better, it's not to the point I'd sacrifice content for it.

I can get behind this, but I don’t think I’ve ever actually experienced a content update that added a new biome. For anyone who started playing in the last two years or so, skill trees are probably the most accessible and fun updates.

Well ofc people would love a dlc expansion to DST but since that is never gonna happen, skill tree updates are the next best thing. Most importantly they are free!

In fairness, klei alot of people would pay for a 20quid dlc expansion but I know you guys make more off skins for less effort... but come on! Give the people what they want!

To me, the best update to DST ever was forgotten knowledge. It was a long while ago, but added both the lunar grotto and the archives. It's full of early & late game QOL, lore and mechanics wrapped into what I would consider DST's prettiest location.

I agree, the Archives and the Lunar Grotto are both beautiful. I wish I was playing when they were added, but for me they’ve just always existed.

Someday I hope I’ll get to experience the excitement of a new biome. But until then, skill trees are the most enjoyable updates I’ve personally been able to be part of (even though I agree that new biomes are probably the best updates, and I really enjoy the new bosses as well).

Fair enough. I have hope they'll add a new within the next few updates to add a centrepiece for the endgame of From Beyond, like the Ruins & Lunar Island, but that's mostly speculation.

In my opinion it was far worse. It showed what Don't Starve could be if it was a "combat" game. Characters got flashy and cool abilities, and weirdly enough they flowed really well together. Learning your characters role and fighting the specific groups of enemies, being a "mage" or a "healer" with the appropriate characters. It was actually good, and showed Don't Starve could work if it incorporated that kind of content into the main game.

This brought discussions, and arguably a sentiment that the game should be modernized with this kind of stuff. Lo and behold Wigfrid gets her spear-dash that she had in the Forge, I was honestly surprised Wolfgang didn't get a mega-leap ability, but WX did get an electric recoil circuit and Willow was basically turned into a fire mage.. I wasn't really around on the forums at that time though, but I did find myself kinda wishing that the weapons and skills the characters had could somewhat be imported into the main game because I was having so much fun.

I hope Webber gets his Forge ability as a skill tree skill, 3 little spiders that don't hitstun and are immortal that contribute small damage over time is neat.

I really like the quality of life updates because there is a good addition of new items, structures, sometimes even mobs but most importantly a ton of much needed improvements for things we already have. I really loved the A Little Drama Update which added some good quality of life and the stage which is one of my favorite things to find in the world.

I'm one of the people who voted skill trees. I like all sorts of updates, but character updates affect your entire playthrough from start to finish, and some characters are in desperate need of a little something extra to put them on-par with the rest, which skill trees have provided (looking at Winona, Wormwood, and Willow). I'm really looking forward to Warly's.
