Theukon-dos
That's a bit of a loaded question. There are a lot of metrics on how you can judge a character as "The best". Each giving different results. Not to mention with us barely being through the skill trees, and solid answer is extremely volatile and could change within the month. That being said: The answer is Maxwell. And it's not even close. He may not be the best at any one thing. But he's really damn good at everything. He's the best at logging and mining. Sure, Wurt might be able to beat him with enough subjects, but merms can't dig stumps or pick items up for her. Not to mention that he's able to chop with 90% efficency the moment he joins a world thanks to the Codex Umbra spawning with a full fuel tank. He's the best at gathering pickables. Perks that boost the ability too collect things like grass and twigs are surprisingly rare. And even if they weren't, Maxwell would probably still be considered amongst the best due to the nature of his Puppets. And hey, Wickerbottom's books can get those things faster. Except Maxwell is allowed to use them once they're crafted. So he can do everything she can do on top of his existing kit. He's the best at moving items. The shadow tophat is a cheap 14 inventory slots that he can just keep on him at any given time. It doesn't even take up an equipment slot like Backpacks do. He's really damn good at fighting. Puppet duelests give him a lot of damage. You do need to boost up their shadow level for it, but everything that boosts shadow level is just equipment you'd want to wear anyways, like dark swords and night armor. And then ofcourse he has immense crowd control thanks to shadow prison. His low-HP is barely even a downside. Not only is it still more than enough of a buffer to keep you alive so long as you heal. But Maxwell is also the best user of Night Armor and it's 95% damage resistance. If I had a nickel for every "glass cannon" character whose perks let them use high-DR armor with reduced penalty, I'd have 2 nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice. Maxwell's power is so vast and so far-reaching that it borders on absurd. And the best part? Even if skill trees succeed in bringing everyone else up to his level, Klei has committed to giving everyone a skill tree. Including Maxwell. Meaning they're gonna buff the strongest character in the game and we'll just end up back to square one. This fact is a non-insubstantial part of why I hate skill trees so much, but that's not here or there. Theukon-dos
6 minutes ago, grm9 said: they can with tools 11 probably only soghtly like wolfgang except alignment perks I admit I didn't realize Merms could dig stumps now, that's on me. And while I got the number wrong, 11 extra inventory slots is still far more than every other character. The only one comparable is Walter thanks to Woby, but that's still just 9 slots. But as for that last section: here's the problem. Wolfgang's skill tree was exceedingly boring, and definitly less of a power jump than other character's. But it wasn't minor. He still got several really powerful tools, Including an AOE freeze weapon, a solid 90% of his planar damage back, and 30% extra damage against aligned enemies which stacks multiplicatively with his existing 2x damage. It may not be as flashy as Willow's Biden Blast or Winona basically being immortal. But even minor buffs on an already strong character can compound immensely. And this is all assuming that Maxwell does get a boring and relatively low impact skill tree, which isn't guaranteed given that Klei currently seems to be speedrunning power creep within skill trees. Again, Winona is basically immortal now. Who knows what Klei will do next. Gashzer
I have always chosen my main based on how low effort the perks are verse the rewards. Back before reworks, dlc characters and skilltrees. Maxwell was my main because his shadow servants were/are very good at gathering resources. But ever since Walter came out, I just can't shake how convenient it is to have beefalo utility without the whole beefalo taming mechanic. Plus extra inventory is op hence why krampus sack is the rarest item in the game. Walter is massively underrated especially if you are experienced at the game. All body slot items are indirectly buffed because of woby inventory allowing you higher levels of general QoL in day to day gameplay, no sanity drain in darkness or mobs allows increased scope for basing, you can base in caves as Walter without sanity drain being something to consider. Early game speed buff in the form of big woby gives the best QoL perk to the "hardest" part of dst which is the early game exploration and grind This isn't even Walters final form yet, once he gets his skilltree he will be undoubtedly the best character in DST. Walter's still lacking the inventory of Maxwell Him being the 3rd best character after his skill tree is up for grabs, and if they REALLY buff his ranged DPS and Woby he could become a force to recon with. But it's far from a guarantee he ends up top 3, and very very unlikely to be top 2 Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/158785-whos-the-best-character/page/2/#findComment-1739016 Share on other sites
