Walter skill tree idea! Exclusive backpack slot.

To negate his downside Walter needs to wear his pinecone pioneer hat 24/7 which ofc locks him out of all head slot armours unless you want to deal with nightmare creatures.

Since this downside is one of the most prominent in DST. I believe Walter deserves to gain a skill which gives him a exclusive backpack slot allowing walter to have a backback, body armour/clothing and pinecone hat all equipped at the same time.

 

I mean Woby's storage kinda already makes up for a backpack should you choose to use the pine tree hat or you could a be-... nevermind. While his downside is prominent I think the main issue people have with him is that he doesn't feel rewarded enough for what he puts you through with his skills on average feeling lackluster.

Yeah but its not enough, Klei needs to emphasize and encourage the use of the pinecone hat with body armour. Way too many people play Walter with the standard football helm and backpack playstyle, get mad at the increased sanity loss and call walter bad.

Three ways Klei can encourage people to change playstyles abit: 

1. Give Walter a backpack slot, freeing people up to use both body armour and backpack.

2. Give Walter a powerful unique body armour of his own, i suggested a ghillie suit before.

3. Seriously buff the pinecone pioneer hat to contend with the likes of an eyebrella or other head gear. Making it a jack of all trades weather insulation with both tier 2 summer/winter insulation with 50% water resist would be my suggestion for it.

Hence why my ideas need to be implemented. Taming a beefalo is the complete opposite of what people should be doing with Walter.

I thought about something long time ago; to swap his abilities. He loses sanity and health 1:1 inherently and what makes him immune to sanity auras is the hat. That would certainly make people use it because even I can't be bothered to use it as it is. I do use body armor, but I just prefer the head slot for other things like Beefalo hats, eyebrellas, miner hats, dreadstone helmets, or even the stage masks.

Anyway, the Walter skill tree will make the hat twice as effective. It's not a prediction, it's a fact. I can see the patterns.

Your kinda trying to fix the wrong problem people would look past his sanity loss if he had some impactful abilities this is the real reason he's called bad most people are already able to deal with his sanity downside but when you combine it with niche abilities it's drags down people's opinions of him.

Also if you really want people to use the pinecone pioneer hat you're probably gonna have to give it some better abilities to make it more worth using.

At the end of the day his design encourages him to use a beefalo even more so as people who play him tend to want to fight while mounted all your change would do is have people use a mag, backpack, and a helmet.

new slot for walter, the badges belt, he can place different badges which are earn and crafted by various means and each have a different effect (but thinking about it thats how they will design his skill tree, it is just badges)

i dont want more space for walter i want him to feel rewarded from using woby over a beefalo, and for the slightshot to be decent

on the one hand merit badges sounds like a no brainer, on the other hand this sounds too much like WX's circuits in practice, though i'm not opposed to the idea, his badges could have more utility than WX's circuits which are mostly personal upgrades. Like he could get a bonus fuel value when fueling campfires, bonus damage or quicker speed for his slingshot, he could get a badge that gives all backpacks 2 extra slots, there's quite a bit of potential its just a question of how much does it overlap with what WX already does.
