Character "voice" vs quotes like / dislike contrast?

Recommended Posts

For me I /adore/ reading all quotes I can find on the forum, although I don't play most characters from the games. My "motivation" for not playing most is either that I don't like their "voice" or I ADORE their voice but I can't stand speech patterns of the character. I just made this thread because I probably can't be the only one who struggles with this [asides from when choosing Wes obviously. Beloved little mime doesn't give trouble in one aspect at least]

For example: I love ALL quotes from Winona that show her negative opinion about Maxwell. [and I like reading her quotes in the DS wiki in general] but I sadly can't stand to hear her "voice" [although I think the choice for her "voice" is perfect! I just don't like to hear the contrast to other voices]

Then also another example of a character who's quotes I adore to read but who I don't play because of my ears' negative reaction to his "voice" would be Webber. Once again I adore the choice the made for his "voice", it's just hard to endure for me.

Then the complete contrast: Wortox has one of my favourite "voices" in the whole game [third favourite voice], but I can't stand to read his hyuyu [although that is a sound my brain can literally hear in instrument form]. It's just the hyuyu! I truly love most of the trivia inside his quotes.

Those were just few examples of characters I would like to play, but who I don't play because of the contrasting feelings I have between what I hear and what I read. [also not using examine all the time is no option to me, because the game feels awfully empty to me when I don't hear the characters talk all the time ^^].

So basically to solve this issue when playing DST I always have at least one artifical Wilson bot as game companion active [chosing the character randomly] so they are silent most of the time and I only hear them speak their announcing quotes. Which is a bit sad, but gladly there is NO character in this game of which I can neither stand the voice nor the quotes.

just a small side addition: Although I play Wilson in singleplayer DS the most because of his perfect "voice" and his funny "science" quotes, I often have an extremly hard time to understand the puns he uses. Still I wouldn't want this guy's quotes to be any different.

I don't mean in it a negative way :wilson_resigned: I know it's probably supposed to be an adorable impish laughter, which perfectly fits his instrument, but as much as my brain LOVES to hear "hyuyu" translated into melody, my brain at the same time reads out "hyuyu" in a super weird way which doesn't sound like a laughter at all but more like an ambulance emergency sound.

Hyuyuyuyuy

Thanks, funny enough there was just an actual ambulance heard outside my window when I read this?! Did you summon it? What kind of dark magic is this?! Wortox is creepier then I thought x)

EDIT: the noice won't stop anymore, this seriously is the darkest magic possibly existing. It's gone, finally! ...but seriously what on earth was that?! I'm dying from laughter over here.

Wigfrid going “HOW I LONG FOR A FEAST”

I don't quite know what you dislike about the quote, but for me this would only bother me if I played her and were surrounded by a huge biome full of vegetables x) Or do you mean her quote and her voice doesn't fit together for your ears when she says it?

Wandas quotes are either hit or miss. I like her Maxwell statue quote, but the rest of hers are repetitive since she just complains and makes time puns all the time.

True which is so much a waste of potential! Though I adore her quotes whenever she inspects turf simply by how relatable it is.

I think Webber would probably cry if he knew you thought his voice was annoying.

I'm sorry for the poor boy. It's less annoyance though, it's more a pain in my ears such as with Lucy's voice. If there is a voice I actually consider annoying then it is Winona's, which does not cause my ears pain but simply is annoying to listen to in contrast to the other voices.
