Controllers SUCK, heres an idea to fix it

Recommended Posts

one of the problems plaguing the playstation/xbox/switch port (and controller users on pc) is the lack of control compared to PC users. this mostly comes in the form of an inability to finely control where abilities are aimed (e.g: wortox cannot control his teleports easily)

however there may be a fix. perhaps so long as

A: the crafting menu is unopened

and

B: there is a "usable tool" that has a target indicator (winonas new remote perchance) either equipped or otherwise in use (always an option for wortox because of soul hop)

you could click in the right stick and enable the movement of the current "target" using the right stick. this would last until the usable item is unequipped, or the crafting menu is opened (this resets the cursor back to its default location)

this could work as a pseudo-cursor, and would allow controller players to actually properly use these mouse dependent items and abilities properly.

i made this post because @Mike23Ua

mentioned how he's unexcited for the winona rework, and its because he wont be able to properly control the catapults.

please klei, work on your controller controls so that all platforms can properly use all this cool stuff you've made.

have a great day, and thank you for reading!

As a veteran controller user, I agree.

For me it's mainly the crafting tab, but also the weird button combinations you have to do with certain items like the "Battle Rond". But the crafting menu is actually awful on controller. Very hard to naviagte while running for your life, and the "quick" crafting tab isn't any quicker.

Also. When is support for PS controllers going to be added to PC? It's only Xbox Controllers even if you are using a PlayStation controller. It makes the touchpad (Which is normally used to open the map) useless! Also giving the ability to zoom out to PC players but not console players is ridiculous. Especially when the PlayStation controllers have the touchpad where swiping up or down have different inputs. You have alot of free real estate here Klei.

Sincerely,

Cactus

As someone who has both pc and switch versions of the game. Its insane how much more difficult the switch version is and most of that is down to the controller.

Wortox is one of most fun characters for me on pc, the precise soul hopping for kiting attacks and zooming around is fantastic.

However the fixed soul hop distance with controllers is absolutely shocking. Feeling like a different and lesser mechanic.

I remember when the Klei dev team teased that they had hired a group of developers who’s sole purpose of being hired was to improve the quality of the game for Consoles.

But I don’t feel like nothing ever actually came from that.. and I deeply wish that Klei would actually stick true to their word, maybe they can get someone to do an actual Console port of DST that’s built from the ground up exclusively with Controllers in mind.

They would certainly not be the first company to have to do it..

Its just very painful to watch so much of this game rely heavily on point and click mouse controls that are either barely working.. or in extreme cases- Aren’t even performable with a Controller at all (like dropping logs in water to distract cookie cutters, or dragging meat onto Gnarwail to tame them, Or dragging anything into Water to get rid of it etc..)

The game is very clearly designed as a point and click KB & Mouse game first, and everything after that is just sloppy seconds.

And had I KNOWN THAT before buying DST I would’ve never in my life purchased it.

I didn’t quite get that feeling when it came to DS, I mean it read as “console edition” and it seemed to function fairly decently on consoles.

Though the truth is if I would’ve been on the DS forums I likely would’ve noticed glaring differences there too.

One of the biggest things that currently irks me so bad with DST is how much more cumbersome boating and boating activities are compared to the shipwrecked DLC that was ported by Capy or the Hamlet DLC that was ported by Lab42.

Those genuinely felt “good” to play on a controller, and we didn’t have silly weird features like standing on top of a boat leak and dropping a few rocks on it to slow the progress of the leak etc..

I wonder, how hard is item swaping in a battle on a controller? Like is switching your walking cane with your weapon on controller impossible or something?

It used to be… until a very recent patch that significantly improved it by miles.

10 years on the sticks, couldn’t agree more. Having a sort of “channel” option to be able to aim various tools or what not would be a dream come true for me.

things that seem like a staple to most players like the lazy explorer are just unappealing to me
