Why Wurt swimming wouldn't be OP

Recommended Posts

Alright, first, the restrictions and downsides i have in mind:

- Drain 1 hunger/sec, drown if you fall below 20 hunger.

This makes it so it has consequences on land too, since if you take too long you'll resurface with an empty stomach (Disastrous with Wurt's vegan downside.)

- Cannot fight or do labor

- Cannot eat, making longer trips dangerous.

- Completely useless in the caves, compared to Wortox.

This makes it purely a movement and item collection tool ON THE OCEAN.

Now for the upsides of this.

- Ability to move across small gaps, making it great for casual use when moving between chunks of the mainland.

- 20 wetness initially gained when jumping into water, 3/sec wetness gain.

- Don't have to row everywhere to collect a stray item

- Quick, early kelp collection for merm king

- If near, Lunar island visits.

- More total swimming time with the merm king stat buff.

What about swim speed? Will it be the same as walking or slower? Does held items affect it, or you cannot hold items at all?

probably only 10-20% faster compared to woodie's 40% boost as the weregoose. chest items like backpacks could be equipped so i imagine they could do smth to. held items never count.

I think you need to flesh out the 'how' in order for the suggestion to come to life.

For the record, I'm on your side.

Apparently full amphibious wetness armor only adds 50HP. I think it's prudent to just merge both the wetness armor and have the last skill of that half of the tree be swimming.

50 HP? a single glommer goop can do that!

I fully support her being able to swim, but I honestly think she should be slightly slower than walk speed. Like marble suit or piggy back kind of deal.

Swimming giving her wetness would be an amazing synergy with the rest of her skill tree. Pop in the lake to heal.

then maybe her hunger loss would be something like 0.5/sec instead?

now the danger is moreso wasting time because you're a slow goober?

I don't know, if the point is just to pick up a few stray items and make a shortcut, the point isn't really speed. Even if you make the shortcut with a slower speed, it's still shorter than walking around a whole river. If swimming is faster than walking I can imagine someone just stockpiling food and swimming around early game instead of exploring the map normally.

I think the balance to aim for is, Wurt able to go gather stuff off the coast, like kelp or bottles, or crossing a river instead of walking all the way around, but not being able to reasonably swim to another island. Thats what boats are for.

Have any of ya'll actually tried playing with swimming? I'm really not sure what crazy tech you guys think is opened up by swimming - having a boat is way cushier and if you have sails or any decent oar it's way faster. By swimming you forgo Fire/Endo fire pits, pinch n winch, tin fishin' bin, an infinite inventory capacity by dropping stuff on boats, etc.

I keep seeing people suggest random limitations like stamina as though swimming being otherwise OP is somehow self evident. It's not. A LOT of mechanics you'd want to engage with straight-up require a boat to use. Good luck getting knobbly tree nuts without a boat to ram em' and a pinch n winch to grab em'.

If swimming would just be a movement thing then I agree, at that point it would be mainly for early game exploration similar to goose, and people who want to get to islands without boating. Due to its ease of access it should probably be somewhat slow, but I'd still use it tbh.

i imagine its great for casual use and could pair well with the rest of her skills, since they focus on maintaining wetness.

you could take many shortcuts depending on how the landmasses are divided.
