Wickerbottom Skilltree stuff

Recommended Posts

This is a compiled list of ideas that I tried to explore to give Wickerbottom a fun set of skills, however there are too many of them to fit into one skilltree.

I wish to gather feedback here on those abilities, because I am admittedly biased towards Wickerbottom so there’s definitely overpowered stuff. Let me know what you think!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

skill4.png.63a4c1675933eda70023046806a83966.png   Scholar's Aptitude
Grants Wickerbottom's spells a moderate boost when casting with more than 50% Sanity.

(This skill is applied to spells that have numerical value, such as "Horticulture, Expanded" growing 15 -> 21 crops, "Apicultural Notes" spawning 3 bees instead of 2, "Overcoming Arachnophobia" slowing for 35% instead of 25%, etc.)

extras3.png.77f5b5e6a4b3e268bc51200f572d5bc1.png   Power Surge
Casting below 25% Sanity will unleash a stronger effect from offensive books:

  • The End is Nigh - Increases Lightning's damage from 10-20 to 25.
  • Sleepytime Stories - Sends creatures into panic for 4 seconds after waking up.
  • On Tentacles - Prioritizes spawning tentacles underneath closest creatures within spellcasting area.
  • Overcoming Arachnophobia - Increases web radius from 3x3 to 4x4.
  • Apicultural Notes - Briefly enrages all your Grumble Bees after summoning.

skill5.png.bd10571fe610d67c36dcd6fd56dd4fe9.png   Magic Expertise
I: Magic items worn by Wickerbottom consume 25% less Durability and are fueled by 25% more.
(Includes: Tier 1 Magic, Amulets, Staves)
II: Fire and Ice staves can now be refueled with Nightmare Fuel by 20%.

extras2.png.9d98813f9eac3dfd036e445ac48b367b.png   Corrupt Embrace
Casting spells below 25% Sanity will cause your melee attacks to overflow with shadow energy, dealing 17 extra Damage for up to 10 seconds.
This transforms into Planar Damage if Wickerbottom is attacking a planar creature.

extras1.png.0102a1de9b11fbcc4778f6eab19ef10b.png   Kinetic Charge
Empower Morning Star with the ability to call down lightning.

Each melee hit will cause Morning Star to generate 25 Charge, which can reach 250 maximum total.
Wickerbottom can right-click to cast Lightning on target creature from distance, dealing electric damage equal to the stored charge.

Morning Star's durability can be repaired when it's struck by Lightning.
Holding it in hand will attract lightning, and it can also be put on a Lightning Rod to absorb lightning strikes for repairs.

(((Props to Gi-go for the idea of buffing up Morning Star and to make it attract lightning when equipped in hand!)))

skill7.png.c0cafcac2fa94b4a42eaaa7839965f2d.png   Elemental Conduit
Empower Ice and Fire staff attacks, and grant them an alternate cast, which consumes 25% Durability.

I: Ice Staff’s freezing strength is doubled.

Right-clicking with Ice Staff unleashes arctic wind in a cone shape and freezes multiple targets.
The freezing is as potent as four non-buffed Ice Staff blasts.

II: Fire Staff’s attacks now splash to multiple targets.

Right-clicking with Fire Staff causes selected ground area to crack, which lasts for 30 seconds.
When any creature steps on the crack, it will burst into magma pool, which deals 15 Damage every 1/3 of a second to creatures walking inside of it, and lasts up to 12 seconds.

extras4.png.d20f5e45d7d8083bd120b0fae441b59e.png   Thermal Shock
Inflict a special effect when firing Fire or Ice staff against opposite element.

I: Using Ice Staff on a burning creature will extinguish them and cause frostburn, instantly dealing Fire damage to it that it would've taken during whole period of burning.
II: Using Fire Staff on a frozen creature will cause them to thaw and explode into icicles, freezing other nearby creatures and dealing 42 Damage to them.

skill8.png.7f5c67eae26f36f8a2225c88c696bfa8.png   Ice Queen
Significantly empower Wickerbottom’s freezing capabilities.

I: Creatures frozen by Wickerbottom will suffer x1.5 more Fire damage from all sources for 1 minute after thawing.
II: Creatures frozen by Wickerbottom have their movement speed slowed by 25% for 1 minute after thawing.
III: If a creature is killed while frozen, it will explode into ice shards, which freezes nearby creatures and deals 42 Damage to them.
Freezing from those ice shards is affected by this skill as well, which can result in chain reactions.

skill9.png.7453d4abbe157dcd1ecaeada8960eb39.png   Memorize
Allows Wickerbottom to memorize one Book, which consumes it and puts it in "Brain" slot.

Wickerbottom can cast the memorized spell without consuming durability.
The sanity is depleted as normal.
Wickerbottom can replace her memorized book with another, however the previously memorized book will disappear for good.

skill10.png.a486d145d0bdc727c2139db465596b67.png   Bookbinding Kit
Wickerbottom can now craft a "Bookbinding Kit".
(Recipe: 1 Sewing Kit, 1 Living Log, and 2 Papyrus)

The kit can be used to repair one of her books by 3 uses.
It has a maximum durability of 8.

skill11.png.bee6eabe2aa265b053677612bdd73ff8.png   Bookonomicon
Wickerbottom can craft "Bookonomicon", into which she can integrate up to 6 spells.
(Recipe: 2 Living Logs, 2 Papyrus, 4 Nightmare Fuel)

On use, this book brings up a menu (similarly to Willow/Maxwell) with spells you have integrated, which you can cast.
The book acts mostly as a container, so all spells retain their individual characteristics.

Books integrated within Bookonomicon regenerate 1% Durability every 30 secs, and will never be destroyed.

While casting from Bookonomicon, if a spell exceeds its durability cost, it will be disabled until it reaches its durability requirement threshold.
(For example, using Sleepytime Stories at 12% Durability will drop it to 0% Durability and will no longer make it usable, until it gets repaired to at least 20% Durability).

skill12.png.4d78122b103183f3a345448ffb750f38.png   Lunar Talisman
Allows Wickerbottom to craft a Lunar Talisman, which feeds on the moon's energy.
(Recipe: 1 Blue Moonlens, 4 Moon Shards, 2 Thulecite)

During night, the Talisman will generate 1% Durability every 5 seconds when exposed to the sky.
Full moons will double the durability gain.

When equipped, 50% of Sanity loss is redirected towards the talisman, consuming its durability instead.
Each 1% of Durability counts as 3 Sanity.

skill13.png.be83b342cb99365eceb71615acf7957c.png   Controlled Chaos
Offensive spells can now be directed to the target area.

(For example On Tentacles, Overcoming Arachnophobia, The End is Nigh, etc. - target area can be chosen radially similarly to Maxwell's shadow spells.
Wickerbottom can choose to right-click the book two times in a row to forgo this skill and cast without targeting like before.)

skill14.png.107a64ae8350a93bc7c9223a03617e4e.png   Librarian's Leisure
At the Bookshelf, Wickerbottom can write a random non-spell book, using 2 Papyrus and a Feather Pencil.
The written book mysteriously rearranges letters to fit the reader's interests.

Any survivor can read this book, which will produce one of the following effects:
- Increase Sanity by 50.
- Increase Sanity by 33, and receive 1-2 random Blueprints.
- Increase Sanity by 33, and receive 1-2 random Recipe Cards.
The book disappears upon use.

skill15.png.3c0c067777bb0171a2488facb0d35c67.png   Cat Lover
Wickerbottom can now feed a Catcoon with Fish to permanently tame it.

Tamed Catcoon receives the following bonuses:
- Grants 3.33/min sanity aura.
- Directly brings gifts and hunted creatures to Wickerbottom.

Gain ability to craft:
- Cat Collar, which allows you to name your Catcoon.
- Tempting Yarn, which distracts nearby Catcoons and forces them to play with it. The yarn causes Catcoons to not hurt any creatures nor pick up items.
- Catcoondo (Cat Condo), to which you can assign your tamed Catcoon through Cat Colar. Standing near it will grant 25/min Sanity regeneration if a Catcoon is playing in it.

Catcoons have internal "Hunger" stat, which cap at 50 and decay by 10 each day.
Starving Catcoons will not grant any bonuses above, and if unfed for long enough will abandon Wickerbottom.

skill16.png.14a2e96a851dfb578583232c8fc09edc.png   Deft Hands
Sewing Kit now repairs twice the durability.
When Wickerbottom repairs clothing, it will receive +3.33/min Sanity regeneration and +60 Insulation bonus for 3 days.

skill17.png.51dadd24ee9f238e19193ee1d70e56dd.png   Homely Knitting
Wickerbottom can knit a pair of Wooly Gloves and a Wooly Sweater.
(Gloves Recipe: 4 Beefalo Wool, 2 Silk)
(Sweater Recipe: 8 Beefalo Wool, 4 Silk, 1 Bunny Puff)

The gloves can be equipped in hand slot to provide 240 Insulation and 3.33/min Sanity regen.
The sweater provides with 360 Insulation and 6.66/min Sanity regen.

skill18.png.4c5b80f9cea84937b1483dd74eb88f06.png   Living Paste
Wickerbottom can mill herbs to produce Living Paste, which has restorative properties.
Recipe produces two, non-perishable pastes.
(Recipe: 1 Living Log, 1 Tilweed, 3 Foliage)

The paste can be administered to recover 10 HP + 50 HP within 50 seconds.
Temporarily receive 66% less damage from Fire, Overheating, and Freezing after application.

skill19.png.94fbbd7d969f9dcd93bb059eb6881587.png   Moon Balm
Wickerbottom can mill ingredients to produce Moon Balm.
Recipe produces two, non-perishable balms.
(Recipe: 2 Lune Tree Blossoms, 2 Moon Moth Wings, 1 Glommer's Goop)

The balm can be administered to recover 60 Sanity within 30 seconds.
The sanity regeneration is increased depending on how insane the survivor is, up to +100% more if at 0 Sanity.

skill24.png.3642b88df3406c2936f7b63b03b00c70.png   Crystal Ball
Wickerbottom can craft a Crystal Ball, which is capable of predicting events and scrying for locations.
The Crystal Ball must be activated, after which Wickerbottom can write a question in chat to trigger its ability.

It performs the following functions:
- Scry for areas.
(For example, asking where Ruins or Lunar Grotto is)

- Predict events.
(For example, asking when an event occurs, like Hound Wave, Rain, Meteor Shower, Nightmare Cycle)

The question can be formed in any way the player wishes, as long as the sentence includes a keyword for the location or event the player wishes to reveal.

As the ball reveals its information, it will drain Sanity depending on how difficult the information is normally obtained.
For mild locations, like finding a specific biome, the Sanity cost is 50.
For secretive locations, such as Ruins, the Sanity cost rises to 150.
Predicting events can range from 75 to 150 Sanity.

The ball will only accept questions from the person currently interacting with it.
The ball goes into cooldown for 2 days after usage.

You can insert Nightmare Fuel into Crystal Ball to shift your event of interest sooner, or amplify the information received.
For example, asking about Hound Wave with the fuel inserted will cause it to arrive sooner than the game has initially planned. As for locations, they will be exposed at larger radius.

After fueling the ball, it will burst and release 3 aggressive Terrorbeaks, and afterwards it will go into cooldown for twice as long.

SHADOW AFFINITY

skill20.png.da932338c7c2916c8530c4341b4d603f.png   Shadow Scribe

Wickerbottom can mill ingredients to create Grimdark Ink.
(Recipe: 3 Pure Horror, 4 Dark Petals)

The ink can be applied once to only some of her books, which transforms them into an upgraded version.

The following books accept the ink:

The End Is Nigh
Launch 16 consecutive Shadow Bolts, which prioritize healthiest enemies.
Each strike deals 40 Damage and sets enemies ablaze in Shadow Flames, which deal 12 Damage every 1/3 of a second.

Wickerbottom won’t be hurt by the shadow lightning unless she’s insane.
This spell does not affect other players.

Practical Rain Rituals
Summons Acid Rain over target area, which continually deals 30 Damage per second to creatures under it.
The acid erodes mobs defenses, forcing them to take 21 extra Damage from melee attacks.

Overcoming Arachnophobia
Creatures entering the web are gradually slowed up to 50% within 3 seconds.
At maximum slowness, a swarm of Shadow Biters emerge from the webs and devour entangled mobs, taking 30 Damage each second they stay in the web.

skill22.png.9d27cf3267f1f20bbd8814259759c871.png   Shadow Witch
Casting a spell will mimic previously casted spell at half efficiency.

(Example scenario:
Your spell order is Overcoming Arachnophobia, The End is Nigh, and then The End is Nigh again.

You cast Overcoming Arachnophobia – it works as normal.
Afterwards, you cast The End is Nigh – it will automatically cast Overcoming Arachnophobia on top of it over target area for 50% less duration. This cast is free, and instant.

Afterwards, if you cast The End is Nigh again, it will replicate your previous casted spell – in which case, it was The End is Nigh, not Arachnophobia. Therefore, the mimicked The End is Nigh will launch 8 bolts instead of 16, on top of your primary The End is Nigh, which will in total result in 24 bolts)

LUNAR AFFINITY

skill21.png.9200d8057e21e477d2430c39f3197246.png   Lunar Fictioneer

Wickerbottom can mill ingredients to produce Celestial Ink.
(Recipe: 4 Moongleams, 4 Infused Moon Shards, 2 Lune Tree Blossoms)

The ink can be applied once to some of her books, which transforms them into an upgraded version.

The following books accept the ink:

Applied Silviculture
Nearby trees and plants will unleash their roots to Entangle mobs, dealing 20 Physical + 40 Planar Damage and stopping them in place for either up to 12 seconds, or until mobs damage the roots enough to release them.

The roots have 70 Health, and act similarly to Spiny Bindweed's.

Birds of the World
Summons 4-6 Moon Hawks around Wickerbottom, which glisten with lunar light and look around for prey, before taking off.

If Moon Hawks see any creatures nearby, they start circling around them while turning transparent, and within a few seconds they start phasing into them, dealing 20 Physical + 30 Planar Damage each swoop up to 3 times, before vanishing.

Upon seeing meat, the Moon Hawk will try to grab it and vanish.

The End Is Nigh
Summons 4 meteors over target area, which deal 100 Damage each.
Each meteor upon landing will summon a Greater Gestalt and attack Wickerbottom’s current target for 60 Planar Damage, disappearing afterwards.

skill23.png.752f828796c5e36155dddd719e1f50d5.png   Lunar Occultist

Allows combining Brightshade Staff with the following staves: Fire, Ice, Star Caller, and Morning Star (skill).

Fire Staff becomes Blazing Staff – its standard attack will deal 20 Planar Damage, bounce up to 4 times, and set mobs on fire.
Its alternate attack will internally combust target creature, forcing it to take 100 Damage within 3 seconds.
After such time passes, it will explode for 50 Damage and spread the same effect to nearby creatures.
The second explosion will not spread such effect again.

Ice Staff becomes Arctic Staff, which further increases its freezing strength by triple total, and bounces up to 4 times, prioritizing non-frozen creatures.
Its alternate attack will deeply freeze target creature for up to 40 seconds, ignoring resistances.
After thawing, the target becomes brittle, receiving x1.25 extra damage from all sources temporarily.

Star Caller Staff becomes White Dwarf Staff, which has significantly higher radius and transforms the area into Summer season.
Players near the star have their Sanity flipped to Enlightenment.

Morning Star becomes Polar Star, which deals 32 Electrical + 38 Planar Damage.
Each melee hit increases Charge by 30, storing up to 300 for the Lightning strike.
The lightning strike will chain to up to 6 creatures, reducing its damage by 30 per each bounce.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Scrapped / Needs reworking:

skill1.png.66a4950a4d31703d2257346e8a7cf36f.png   Focus
Spell and Staff casting speed increased dramatically.

(Wickerbottom now casts spells the moment she opens a book, and long staff casting animation such as Star Caller’s is also instantaneous.
Spell/Staff casting animations can be interrupted early as well.)

skill3.png.bee96f7c71df5a188ef6e96f5dccf2c9.png   Mental Repose
When below 50% Sanity, increase sanity gain from all sources by 33%.

Almost all of those are excellent ideas, fine work. Only the Crystal Ball and the salves feel out of place, being more ''witchy'' than they are, uhm... ''sagely''? Like Wickerbottom is. To put it in DnD terms, Wickerbottom has a definite loremaster wizard feel, as opposed to Wanda's artificer and Maxwell's warlock vibes.

As you mentioned, it's just a tad over the top numbers-wise, and some downward tweaks in that regard would be for the best; taken as-is ingame, this would be a very powerful skill tree compared to the ones already there, and Wickerbottom isn't exactly in need of this much extra power. That being done, I'd easily consider this to be good enough to put in the actual game.

Honestly the work put into the skill descriptions and icons are insane. Permanently taming a follower is interesting, which is something only a few follower characters have. Is it only one catcoon? And can they die horribly in an unspecified accident?

Please klei be inspired by this thread, I loved everything!

In my opinion the Crystal Ball(also) and the staff are the ones out of place, since she has the fiery pen, so maybe she should get instead pens versions of the staffs mentioned in the thread.

I believe that the salves one are on character due her nurturing nature (she is quite fond of the other survivors, given when they are mentioned in her quotes), but maybe the skills could be given to other character skill trees.

well she already does that with grumble bees (answering most of your questions).

Probably one if the greatest threads ive seen for a character yet

I am so enthralled by this I wish it was a mod I could install right now.

Theres so much to comment on, I feel giddy xD

Overall though, great ideas, im not super feeling the salves/balms. I understand the premise but I feel its a bit outside the librarian niche. Now, if they were in the actual skill tree I definitely wouldnt complain, but I think it would be fine to slim the perk list down by setting those aside. (Would make good Wilson perks though xD)

Now the only thing left is to put a neon sign onto the bookcase saying "this is alchemy engine"

a fun set of skills, however there are too many of them to fit into one skilltree

All true =)
It's not a finished product, but a source for inspiration, which is a great approach too. Maybe even better than trying to show Klei refined skill trees.
Like the idea behind most skills, absolutely love the icons.

I adore the Cat lady, and knitting perks too, those are just fun and inventive.

Now I want to make a visual for her skill tree, maybe categorize perks alphabetically or call the different sections like, Fiction for magical stuff, Non-Fiction for stuff like the knitting, cat lover, some book crafting stuff, just being really flavorful about it.

they should give the books a second ability that only Wickerbottom can use:

  • Birds of the World- small bird/smallish birds will stay befriended once reaching adulthood for all players in range
  • Sleepytime Stories - can increase the Sandy and health regeneration of sleeping for  All  players in range
  • On Tentacles - Makes all baby tentacles in range friendly.
  • The End is Nigh- all mobs that are currently aggressive to players start panicking
  • Horticulture, Abridged - you can now make giant crops with it + Increased number of berries Harvested
  • Applied Silviculture - Increase number resources harvested.
  • The Angler's Survival Guide - increase fishing success rate for those in range.
  • Pyrokinetics Explained -  can steal the heat from aggressive heat based mobs (fire hounds, dragonfly, larva, etc.) As well as mobs sound fire from the  fiery pen is more efficient
  • Overcoming Arachnophobia - nullify sanity drain from spiders to all in range
  • Tempering Temperatures - can freeze aggressive mobs by taking their thermal energy to refuel itself
  • Lux Aeterna - Beams are now permanent above ground
  • Practical Rain Rituals - when turning off the dry off all in range when on It will form glacier puddles. That can be frozen for resource gathering
  • Lunar Grimoire -  that whole moon cycle is turned to full moon
  • Apicultural Notes - you can harvest bee boxes without provoking bees, and if you’re wearing a be queen crown killer bees won’t come out of their hive and grumble bees will loyalty from bee queen too you rather and the other way around
  • Horticulture, Expanded - giant crops plus increased seed production
  • The Everything Encyclopedia - Unlocks ability to prototype all items that character is capable of prototyping for all players in the radius.
  • Lux Aeterna Redux - creates permanent cave lights

skill10.png.a486d145d0bdc727c2139db465596b67.png   Bookbinding Kit
Wickerbottom can now craft a "Bookbinding Kit".
(Recipe: 1 Sewing Kit, 1 Living Log, and 2 Papyrus)

The kit can be used to repair one of her books by 3 uses.
It has a maximum durability of 5.

skill14.png.107a64ae8350a93bc7c9223a03617e4e.png   Librarian's Leisure

Catcoons have internal "Hunger" stat, which cap at 50 and decay by 10 each day.
Starving Catcoons will not grant any bonuses above, and if unfed for long enough will abandon Wickerbottom

Shadow :

you get a non-book spell called shadow lens

The more crafts you have unlocked the more you know about the things around you (like spectacles as well as more informative inspections and even more insight into shadow stuff)

lunar:

you get a non-book spell called  lunar lens

The more crafts you have unlocked the more you know about the things around you (like spectacles as well as more informative inspections and even more insight into lunar stuff)

I've been working on putting all these skills on a visual skill tree, and i also think that the Ice Queen Branch can probably be cut.

image.png.42aa361fb5a7c76dfd259cf753964de7.png

Here's my attempt at mapping your skills to a skill tree.

(EDIT: Ive had to edit it about 20 times, because I keep noticing something wrong every time I click post, but not when i check it if its good to edit, hopefully im done now.)

I tried to actually make it look like a book case row, categorically organized skills that go left to right.

Oh I think I see what you mean. So instead of the skills being books, the section is a book

Firstly, thank you!

secondly, I tried my shot:

Maybe with a wooden background and some decor on the "books", I think that it will be nice. Oh and a Doily too!

Actually, It could mimic the book placement in her bookcase:

Sadly, this is all far beyond my paint skills.

I gotta be honest, i made crystal ball solely because of her trinket quote

As for staves, I wanted to amplify her use of magics similarly to how Maxwell draws power from magic equipment to buff his duelists, so Wickerbottom instead unleashes the power from within magical equipment. This was mostly an attempt to mimic Forge as well, some extra combat tools to brew up creative solutions and to provide some versatile effects to control the flow of combat further than only with books.

Thank you very much for organizing the skilltree, it looks very cute and clean. Nice work!

You're welcome :D I just loved your idea enough that I just threw something together in photoshop. Im not very good at graphical design or making like, layouts and stuff so its pretty basic.

God, I mostly play wicker on every world, so now I'm just really longing for this skilltree in particular xd, I feel so impatient now xD

For actual feedback. The Ice Queen skill line feels pretty random to me. I like perks that enhance her magical abilities, but I feel like its kinda hyper focused on some weird ice synergy. I also don't think it needs to be three perks deep, mostly because of how random it feels when compared to the kit as a whole. On my lil skill tree thing I just made it two skills, but idk

Spell and Staff casting speed increased dramatically.

(Wickerbottom now casts spells the moment she opens a book, and long staff casting animation such as Star Caller’s is also instantaneous)

skill10.png.a486d145d0bdc727c2139db465596b67.png   Bookbinding Kit
Wickerbottom can now craft a "Bookbinding Kit".
(Recipe: 1 Sewing Kit, 1 Living Log, and 2 Papyrus)

The kit can be used to repair one of her books by 3 uses.
It has a maximum durability of 5.

Do you think I should change it from the more crafts you unlock to something else?

I think that giving wicker "books a second ability that only Wickerbottom can use" is a bit too much, even though people complain that Max can read her books, it is literally only one character that does that, then it would just end up being a "all wicker books are super strong now".

What is that? Is this a fan thing you made or some kind of unused asset?

Not so long ago, @Keknutui was developing the concept of the Wickerbottom skill tree, and I helped him with the visual part, including this "book mite" (as it is called in my country).

Yeah, I get what you mean but people constantly complain about it so I figured Why not give wickerbottom a duel effect so both sides can be happy? Nothing will change for Max it just gives more incentive To stick with  wickerbottom

Wikerbottom went from atheist who is very sceptical to anything paranormal to a full blown wizard over the years, and it's a little sad for me. I could understand her excepting magic over the years of being trapped, but the character trailer is a retcon for me. Maxwell implies the books are magical, but I think this is just cringy meta stuff like Wagstaff's quotes. Reading books does weird stuff but that's just game logic. So id rather not have any magic themed skills. I don't view Wikerbottom as mage.
