The perfect ocean experience

Recommended Posts

I've made some suggestions in the past about ocean content but seeing as we are getting an ocean based quality of life I thought I'd do another breakdown of what I think Klei would need to add in order for the ocean to offer a more rewarding experience. I doubt many of my suggestions will fall within the scope of what a QOL can add but who knows.

Anyway here's what Id like to see

General Ocean and Seasonal Mechanics

  •          Add rough waves to the ocean that occur during rain storms or coincide with the moon cycle.
  •          Add a way for players to cool themselves on boats.
    • Maybe make the fire pump get players wet
    • Or add a new sail that is essentially an umbrella for your boat and provides shade
  •         Add a wind or ocean current mechanic that the player has to account for when navigating

Ocean mechanic Tweaks

  • Buff fishing so that it is both easier and not as long and tedious of a process (theres really no reason for the oceans main source of food to be so slow to collect when berry bushes and carrots exist on land as well as how simple pond fishing is)
  • Allow Wavey Jones to be chased off even when behind structures close to the edge
  • Remove 50-60% of current sea stacks
  • Nerf Rockjaw to be more manageable of a fight
  • Increase Rockjaw spawn in deep ocean
  • Increase skittersquid encounter chance

General Ocean Content

  •      Add more general and random set-pieces to the ocean
    • Examples could include:
      • Rockjaw Den where multiple rockjaws spawn
      • Skitter squid
      • Ship wrecks with boat loot
      • Pirate boats in distress
  •     Add more oceanic activities/unique mobs
    • Add a hunt to the ocean (Land has koalafant, shipwrecked has whale)
    • Add a Klaus equivalent to the ocean for overfishing
    • Add a creature, like the dodo from shipwrecked, that can be rescued from ocean debris and then can start breeding on its own. (perhaps a manatee)

Pirates and Raids

  • Add a craft-able sail you can fly that makes pirate boats neutral to you
  • Incorporate pirate boats in other activities other than raiding
    • allow monkey pirates able to fish
    • have monkey pirates be able to search for treasure they can loot from the ocean (you can interrupt and fight over)
    • allow monkeys to do hunts (if added)
    • monkey boats that are in trouble and sinking
    • make pirate monkeys sing sea shanties in a series of grunts. (i just think this would be neat..)
  • Allow a neutral flag sailing player to trade with monkeys with either bananas or gold
    • trade while monkeys are fishing to receive fish
    • trade boat patch to sinking monkeys to rescue them and either get a reward or have them follow the player boat
    • allow players to recruit pirate monkeys to sail with them on their boat
      • followers can man sails and anchors ( introduce captains whistle or something where blowing it makes pirates on board ship man any available sails or anchors, clicking on the sail or anchor while whistle is equipped allows you to tell the pirates to raise/lower)
      • followers can manage firepits (allow them to have an inventory with 1 or 2 boards by default, can also be given resources)
      • followers can patch boats (allow them to have an inventory with 1 or 2 boat patches by default, can also be given resources)
      • followers can sing sea shanties to raise sanity
      • Once followers time limit is up they abandon ship by jumping in the ocean

World Generation

  • Add an archipelago world gen option or something that breaks the mainland into seperate chunks
  • Add sailable rivers that pass through mainland biomes
  • Incorporate water tiles to the swamp (similar to the mangrove biome in Shipwrecked)

Cool ideas sudoku!

also

  • Delete crabking :eagerness:

In my honest opinion after having fought both of them several times, Crab King and Antlion are one and the same.. (almost)

Think about that for a second, you have a boss.. the boss spams the ground underneath you with a spike like attack that shoots upward attacking either you or your boat, oh and if you take a break in between attacking them they’ll start munching rocks to heal up.

CK is literally just the at sea version of Antlion, and it’s a boring fight I’ve already done before.. the ONLY key differences here are that your paddling around and around in circles trying to avoid water geysers, the pinching claws (much like sand castles..) spawn to keep you in place, and Crab King has a Weather temperature AoE.

Other than that, I’ve effectively decided to call crab king Antlion 2.0..

And both of these fights could use reworks for more interesting and unique mechanics, compared to newer content stuff like Reworked AG, and the Ice Shark.

I don’t have any suggestions on how to improve the CrabKing fight but it’s glaring similarities to a fight I’ve already done before (only difference here being im on a boat now…)

Means that either Antlion or CK need to be reworked to be different enough from each other.

Yeah crabking definitely needs looked at to incentivize players actually fighting it

no, people need to realise that oars got buffed multiple years ago and you can just row away from geysers and kill claws, the only issues are birds landing at where you're trying to place a boat and claws having too much hp as for characters without damage multipliers

Maybe actually using an upgraded boat should be incentivized for the fight instead of discouraged though. Kinda annoying to have all the progress you made be irrelevant because bosses are easier to face without making any.

not if that means removing current fight

The ocean needs more mobs, well to be much more specific.. the ocean needs underwater invisible spawners that spawn mobs.

The oceans mobs need to be a mix of completely passive & aggressive mobs.

The aggressive mobs should make us interact with the deck of our cookie boats.. here are a few examples-

You can simply place an endothermic firepit or fail rows with a wooden paddle to get wet.

Also you can just build an ice box with thermal stones in it. You can also make an ice cube for 8 days protection against summer COMPLETELY.

I think peoples problem with Crab King is WHY would they want to fight him? If it’s for a once and then done Pearls Hermit home quest fine… but why for a boss that’s so annoying does his loot rewards feel so highly underwhelming?

From my understanding of Dragonfly fight people sometimes fight her exclusively for green, yellow or orange gem chances, But aside from the tribute, what reason does anyone have to fight Crab King?

Antlion will destroy the game world with large ground craters that increase in intensity the longer you ignore fighting her.

But this is an Ocean QOL that’s coming, not a boss fight rework that just so happens to be on the ocean..

So I’d much rather Klei focus on making general ocean exploration and activities more exciting. I can careless about a boss I’ll kill ONCE for a Quest then ignore exists forever..

explain WHY he is annoying.

His loot is basically the opening for enlightened crown and all things beyond celestial champion. Btw, there are posts IN THIS VERY FORUM of the beta from when crab king was released, and people's opinion on the strident trident were that it was good because it was simply a meme item. And his ability to uproot bullkelp and fish are unique things in the game. It basically costs 3 horns because of appearences.

If you look at wigfrids commanders helm, it has probably the worst recipe i've ever seen based on the item design, so I don't want that repeating again. It's a lazy solution.

Cookie cutters dropping more shells are already a gigantic buff to the ocean and prob enough to make the whole thing better, but it was an issue to lock pearl behind it with it's old drop chance to begin with, so they admitted that. Only thing the ocean needs is simply more setpieces and content, like sea creatures and hidden resources.

Crab king is not a problem, the only thing that bothers me really is the fact that a noob trying the fight putting other gems would never be able to do it without a tutorial/wiki. Also, current fights without purple gems are extremely hard solo, so changing it so it gives different loot and is more enjoyable to fight in different situations is already a huge fix.

First time I fought him it was hard and I died, But not at ANY MOMENT I thought it was unfair. It was simply skill issue and I knew that. It's the same as a souls-like type of difficulty and I wish klei doesn't make the fight too easy.

If you can't fight crab king currently, just pick wolfgang on a test world until you're used to the fight, then go from him to wilson with an affinity, then without it, then wes. That's what I did, and that's what I think everyone should do to fight him easily, It's literally just a skill issue, not an "unfun fight". But if you can't fight him and refuses to, just cheese him like most youtubers do.

People are exaggerating this way too much, it is not THAT big of a deal. The fight JUST needs some additions to loot and small numbers change and it's fine. The whole idea of completely reworking the thing from ground up on a QoL ocean update is the same as asking for a free DLC-sized update.

You HAVE fought them several times, you haven't beat them several times. You've said this.
Antlion is not CK 2.0, they're comparable if you want to say 'They both have circles around them'
Antlion is fine, enjoyable and requires no rework. CK is fine, but it just seems a little overtuned.

You're absolutely right, that's why people don't fight him much after getting the tribute.

Antlion does not destroy the game world, ignoring her is a viable strategy - it does nothing really.
It's better to say you 'Couldn't' care less, saying you could care less means that you care to a degree.

Antlion is ezzzzz

Antlion is only Easy when you know what to bring and what NOT to bring into her fight, for example if you bring Bernie, or any sort of follower pet that has a health bar and can die (Pig/Merm/Bunny, Beefalo, Carrat, Tycoon, etc..) Then the fight only gets harder because in addition to targeting you, it also targets the other mobs near to you.

Another issue I had with Antlion which only just now got fixed in the NEWEST update on Xbox was the locked Camera Angle, you could not Zoom in or Out (until the newest update) making it incredibly damn hard & Unfair for players who Weren’t playing on PC to even See and dodge out of the way of its attacks.

Nah though, that was a mistake you made. It happens but it says nothing about the overall quality of the boss, it's fine.
