Can 9 mods cause a connection problem?

Recommended Posts

I would like to ask if mods can cause a connection problem. Me and 2 of my friends play DST and no matter who hosts the server, after a while we all lose connection with the server. Is it because 9 mods is too many or is it just a particular one causing it?

Mods we using are:

Increase Storage

Don't Drop Everything

Epic Healthbar

Wormhole Marks

Realistic Placement

Campfire Respawn

Increased Stack size

45 Inventory Slots

Global Positions

We left the world setup pretty much default, just added caves and set up more clockworks and walrus camps and faster regrowth.

Should be a specific mod, but normally mods cause lags instead of immediate disconnects, if the host's game also crashes while other people get disconnected you might want to look into documents -> klei -> client_log.txt and see what's at the end of the file after your game just crashed (launching the game again after that will replace everything in the client_log.txt with the logs from that session you've just started, erasing the log from the previous session), if there's an error, look at the id of the mod that caused it which is after workshop- one or two lines below the line that the word "error" is in. Global positions most likely causes the most lag out of all those. There isn't a specific amount of mods that's too much, it all depends on specific mods, e.g. global positions constantly updates the map of all six players, so it causes a lot of lag, while something that just increases or decreases a specific value or changes a crafting recipe wouldn't contribute to lag practically at all, only a few milliseconds longer loading screen when starting the world.

They can. If you can grab and post the logs. It should tell you what mod is causing the crash.

If you're on Windows it should be here: C:\Users\<username>\Documents\Klei\DoNotStarveTogether\<bunch_of_numbers>\<save_slot_you're_using>

Not sure about Mac/Linux, you'll have to look it up in those cases.

edit: as grm9 said client_log.txt will also work.

Is the disconnect happening whenever the game tries to save? I.e,, when the little science machine appears in the corner, shortly after, you get kicked off the server? I ask because exactly that was happening to me recently. I think it was probably either my "Season Randomizer" one, since people were talking about that not actually working anymore after a newer update, or, of all things, "Trinket Variety", since people were talking about general bugs with that recently.

I'm not using either of those now, but my current world has a BUNCH of mods (two of which are _ancient_) and I've gotten to almost Day 30 no prob.

TL;DR: Lots of mods might cause lag, SPECIFIC mods might cause actual disconnecting. Go to the Workshop and read the latest comments on each mod you're using. That might help you figure out the culprit. It's what I did.

Edit: Or, y'know, post the actual logs and let people who know what they're talking about read 'em. What I did was the NON-tech-savvy way of figuring it out. :P

Yea...out of the mods you listed, most haven't been updated in a long time, and all but 3 have reports of issues, up to and including crashes.

Even if you're able to solve your current issue, I would suggest glancing at mod update dates and comment sections before installing them.

Oh ABSOLUTELY update your mods if they have an update available. ALWAYS update. The game keeps updating, so mods need to as well. Very often it's a chunk of old code that _was_ compatible with the game's regular code but isn't anymore! that's causing the issue.
