You can use the Fencing Sword, too!
It's not permanent, but it's super cheap and lasts twice as long.

This also applies to light bugs, since when they starve and/or are fed they'll go right back up.

I just use woby. She keeps her inventory between shards and cant die. Riding her stops spulmonkeys from robbing her. 

I usually leave chester mostly forgotten in base to serve as an extra stationary chest. 

Hutch lives his life as a lightbox for my cave base.
