Any way to make this game playable with mouse&keyboard on the Steam Deck?

Recommended Posts

Not sure if this is the correct place but here we go-

I've mostly replaced my old PC with my Steam Deck, which serves as a great substitute for my current needs. Literally the only issue I have is that I can't play my favorite game with a mouse & keyboard and that's super frustrating, haha!

I love playing this game and while it's fine to play with the controller, it's nowhere near as great as it is with real peripherals.

And while I do know that you can technically do it by changing the Proton used, the settings still reset every time the game is loaded and the also FPS take a huge hit...

Is there any way to properly enable that? Seems like it wouldn't be the most difficult thing to change and it would be the absolutely best gift of all time to me! :D

Anyways, thanks for the great games, either way!
Cheers!

I did the same. The Deck makes a nice desktop setup for people who wanna enjoy some older or less demanding games.

To get dst working there is this little tool on github that disables the built-in controller of the Steam Deck when other peripherals are connected.

As I said, while yes, that is kind of working, it not only resets back to the controller layout every time you enter the game or even the caves, it also tanks your FPS the second you build any kind of base or farm.

There has to be a way to properly enable keyboard & mouse support on the base Proton...

So I've gotten out of bed at 3:30am just to test this, haha. I followed everything from the video instruction and it still defaults to the Steam Deck controls...

Any idea what I might have to change in order to get it to work?

It's weird as it only disables the built-in controller when a whitelisted USB or Bluetooth device is connecting to the Deck. So they need to get connected on the running Deck or unplugged and plugged in again when they're already connected while booting up the Deck.

I guess it's like this because bluetooth devices are like 1 button press away from getting connected to the console.

You maybe still have to do the whitelisting as it's shown on the github page using the simple_device_list.txt text file. There I had to add my USB peripherals just under which name SteamOS recognizes them.

As said on the github page you open the terminal in desktop mode and there you enter lsusb. This lists you all devices that are currently connected through USB and there you just copy out the name of your input device and paste it into that text file and then the Deck controller should get disabled whenever your device gets connected while SteamOS is running.

Just wanted to update that I tried my best and it didn't work with the Auto Disable script. I tried it all and it just doesn't allow for the Steam Deck to choose any other forms of input.

I guess unless Klei changes the game a bit (maybe through Proton), it just won't be playable with kb&m... What a shame. But I hope that you guys, Klei, will maybe consider changing this in the future!

It would certainly make my day :D
