A Review of Woodie's Skill Tree

Recommended Posts

I hate to say it... but Woodie seems to be having a really fun time in the beta. He built himself a super cute little cabin base where he can relax, chop some trees, do some gardening, or even enjoy a little fishing. And thanks to the new crafting item in his skill tree... he can summon a small army of Tree Guardians to hunt the Deerclops and Bearger with.

It's pretty fun...

Some of the local pigs have even been asking him to renovate the stage area so they can perform Mermio and Piglet. Lucy loves Shakespeare so... I think he's gonna do it.

On a more serious note: I'm enjoying Woodie's new skill tree immensely. Did a Strength Build by going with WereMoose Mastery + Transformation Timer 3 + Cursed Embracer. Couple that with Treeguard Feller 3 and you have a pretty beefy Woodie who is not to be trifled with. I have NOT chosen a Lunar or Shadow perk... as neither really appeal to me.

WereMoose has a 3-hit combo that does 60-60-136 damage... and it's pretty solid if you end the combo with a Charge attack (that now pivots on a dime) to dodge incoming hits.

When I don't feel like fighting, being able to summon a Tree Guardian Army at will is reeeeally awesome. With Tree Feller 2 and a fresh HamBat Woodie does 119 damage per hit... so once the wooden soldiers are done fighting it's pretty easy to mop them up, post battle, for some fresh Living Logs.

Finally, the Woodworking Branch is a must-have... not that the Helmet and Cane are anything to brag about... but they are perfect accessories.

What the Maxwell rework did for the Master of Puppets, this skill tree has done for the Cursed Lumberjack... it made him super fun to play as with some really cool/dynamic gameplay mechanics.

Nice work Klei.

Thank you all for your time and consideration, and have a wonderful beta-testing.

Sincerely,
MrWorm

PS: I highly recommend that we here in the Forums flood the Suggestions and Feedback Page with ideas and recommendations for your/our favorite survivor's upcoming skill-tree make-over-upgrade. It will be good to have them all catalogued in one area where the Devs can have plenty of time to mull them over in advance, without having to search through the hodgepodge of posts here in the Beta Branch.

If it true u can extinguish burning treeguard effigy with a watering can after it has already summoned the 2 treeguards for infinite summoning at the cost of only 1 effigy?

Ive heard someone mention this but i havent done it myself yet.

The effigy is imo the craziest part of his skill tree. Treeguards r incredibly powerful mobs to have as essentially followers which this effigy makes possible.

lucy already had a higher chance to summon treeguards but the effigy just presents them on a platter for u.

I have seen a video on youtube that was made before Applied Horticulture nerfs where a Wickerbottom would advance evergreens to the dead stage for Woodie to then insta-chop and summon guards.

This was done near Toadstool shroom  and despite his AOE the guards obliterated him. And ive seen the same done to enraged klaus.

to think that this is possible now solo at a fraction of the effort is pretty crazy.

Any boss with aoe or the ability to destroy trees and aggro the guards is done for.

@Ohan I have also seen the Toadstool vs Tree Guards YT vid and look forward to duplicating the method on as many bosses as possible.

However I have NOT tried extinguishing the Effigy with a Watering Can... but most certainly will soon. Thanks for the tip!

Woodie's skill tree is perfect! Even though I was annoyed with the other two characters' skill trees and harshly criticized them, Woody's skill tree design definitely deserves a thumbs up for its perfect combination of characteristics and balance, as if it took me back to 2019, when I was woodie main and enjoy his unique experience.

You can in the current patch, but according to the bug tracker this will already be fixed in the next hotfix. Should also be noted treeguards aggro you when you burn a treeguard idol, though there are workarounds for this (planting pinecones, panflute, using a bush hat directly after burning the effigy)

@skile have not gotten that far into the game just yet but if the current beat-downs are any indicator... should be very enjoyable once I get there.

@Arcwell daaarn it... Who told them? It would have been nice to let that "bug" slip through the cracks...

Yes, you can.

In addition, the treeguard idol must be light by the player to summon the treeguard, and other fires are useless, so we can't use it to build automatic farm.

Edit: flame of saladmanders and hungry lavae may work, as they are a documented light action... but I haven't tested them yet.

Ah, what a pity. While it's definitely OP, it really does seem like a legitimate and creative item interaction.

Agreed a large reason Woodie turned out so well is likely due to him being a large talking point leading up to his and I somewhat imagine Walter will get similar treatment considering all his feedback.

Rather than his main skill tree though I'm really curious what his light and dark paths will be.

Side note kinda feel like the hardwood hat missed a opportunity to make it not fall off during transformations.

@Mysterious box I see a lot of good ideas being brought up for various characters, and even though the Suggestions and Feedback Tab isn't the most-popular place, that will insure that the ideas are well grouped.

^^THIS... would be hilarious to see on the Were-forms. I would love to see that in the game.
