How to fix the umbralla? Make it a Critter

Recommended Posts

On the last developer stream , the developers mentiones that they want you to be able to use your hand slot while using the umbralla.

Well , it's the perfect time to rework critters too.

Instead of the anoying hunger mechanic that they currently have, allow players to feed their pets with a specific food item, unique to the pet , to unlock their potential for a limited time.

For example;

You give the vargling a Monster Lasagna, and now he becomes a friendly Hound with some HP.

Give Some taffy to gloomgloom, and recive a small sanity aura

Make a new Bat Critter, and give him food that uses the material the umbralla use to need, and now you get a portable umbrella.

It wouldn't be too Op, considering it will use the same materials the umbralla needed, it could even encourage farming vegetables if you make the critter food more specific.

I think what they will more likely do is just give it a deploy command and it will probably hover and spin in the air above you, maybe with a cooldown.

I was thinking it should be redesigned as sort of a Lantern, as in you just drop it on the ground and it consumes durability (unless turned off)

The things I would have the Umbralla do are act as deployable Shade Canopy/Boulder rain protection.

When dropped it expands in size with Shadow Magic, duh.. and it will provide overheat protection, and Rain/Boulder Protection- But just like a lantern it consumes durability when in Usage.

Deactivating it allows you to drop it on the ground in its non-expanded form.

And because you literally have to Side with Charlie and the Shadows to obtain this: It should probably make Shadow creatures less likely to attack you.

I also equally love the idea of letting it be a Weapon, (like a fencing tool but better)

Not really? You are just activating their harder sides also both the weapon thing and shade things would be nice

I had some ideas

Kittykit: Like the catcoon, it could drop items a few times, basic resources like flint, grass, and branches.

Vargling: Something I had thought was that it be used similarly to Wheeler's Navigadget, only that you could give it an object, it would smell it and it would find the closest one to where the player is.

Ewelet: It could help against enemies by throwing out a bit of mucus, but instead of stopping them completely, it would slow them down.

Broodling: Could give a small area of heat, maybe not so much, but enough to not reach -1 temperature on some occasions.

Glomglom: Could be given a small aura of sanity, just enough so that dusk, night, and caves don't drain your sanity.

Giblet: It could serve as a distraction for some mobs in particular, like hounds for example, it could draw attention and have the hounds follow it so the player can kill them while they are distracted.

Friendly Peeper: could take small bites to cause a little damage to whatever the player is attacking.

Mothling: A small balance could be made, instead of always generating light, it would depend on the percentage of food, for example, how the fuels work in the lanterns that slowly go out.

Pretty sure this is where they are headed. During the rhymes with play the programmer kept showing the drop prompt while talking about the umbralla's rework.
