Expectations from the portal vs. reality (NPCs vs. plants)

When I read the update notes it said something about the new portal creatures being “tuned towards farming”. I forgot how cheeky Klei is so I interpreted it more directly: new otherwordly settlers who can farm. And maybe teach you (the players) some things about farming.

I thought that was a cool idea at least. Because providing new items and crafts isn’t the only way to change the game post-final boss (one of the duo); another approach is to change the world slightly but in a fundamental way. Fundamental way being that there are now NPCs outside of that hermit lady on that remote island and they want to make this large island their home, too.

And they’re not mindless (except towards Wurt) creatures like merms, or completely malleable bait farm/poop farm/materials farm (hammer pig houses) like pigs.

I remember back when I saw (on YT, before playing it) someone play DS in 2014 or something and they encountered a humanoid pig. Woah! There’s apparently a whole civilization of humanoid pigmen that you can interact with. And they have a chieftain? Maybe he can give you quests? Well, not so much.

But that settler invasion (not map-wide but limited) could be a cool change from the meta of being able to “megabase” the whole map. To make late-game DST maybe 10% less about terraforming.

PS: I have also thought about random NPC encounters on the Sea. The Sea lacks things to do, but the usual approach of Biomes might not be the way to fix that. It would be cool if the Sea was a random encounter (and not annoying creatures like sharks) arena where you could meet tradespeople and humanoid adventurers that have nothing to do with the mainland but who just happen to be venturing in the main island’s waters. Then you could maybe trade with them or receive mini-quests. Or you could raid them, since you have pirate gear/cannons now.

I always wanted a trader you can sell giant crops to in exchange for some goodies.

I wish we would get Forge and Gorge NPCs in main game as refugees after our survivors traveled through worlds

This would be perfect for mumsy and billy! They could even have a little shack on the swamp once you active the gateway
