deemo_
Now that a week has nearly passed and we’re most likely coming up to a new update beta soon, what has everyone got in their heads about the new boss? Personally, I love it. Not only is it something new to do in the caves, it’s actually a fun fight. The two attacks it has are very different from most other bosses and it almost feels like a dance while fighting it. Dodging between the nightmares and his devastating swipes is thrilling. The slam attack’s range is very surprising the first few times. It lunges forward an incredible amount and you will most likely not be ready for it the first time around. Also, the wombo combo it hits you with in the second phase with a swipe and slam is absolutely soul crushing. I really hope I’m not the only one who didn’t realise the boss in invulnerable while it has the critters on its back, because that took way too long that I’d like to admit to figure out. The massive -1000/min sanity drain makes the fight considerably more difficult too, as you’ll have to deal with many nightmares alongside it if you don’t have a sanity solution. Lastly, I love that the Pick/Axe is required to fight the boss, I don’t think I would have ever made a Pick/Axe again if this wasn’t the case. I do wish they hadn’t taken the Pick/Axe out of the Large Ornate Chest’s loot pool though, as it would save a little bit of time if you were already planning on killing the Ancient Guardian beforehand. I’d like to hear what everyone else is thinking/has discovered! Ridley
Fought it for the first time today without knowing anything except I'd need the pick/axe. Loved the fight until it never seemed to end. After over a hour of fighting shadows and the boss, my weapons/health/hunger were all nearly gone. Two terrorbeaks escorted my retreat to the surface. Later read the wiki and discovered he was healing while I was fighting off the shadows. Oh how I wish I had realized that much much sooner. That being said, I am a big fan of the combat. THAT’S why the fight took so long! I had no idea this was a mechanic, no wonder it felt like it had way more than 10,000 health. I wholeheartedly agree that the fight does feel like it takes forever. Maxposting
I love that Klei has more complex boss fights that are "kiting", but are less tedious and boring. I think boss health bars would be a nice addition for DST to have. It would make bosses seem more epic and help people better understand what is happening during fights like ancient fuelweaver, crab king and nightmare werepig. I'd rather have characters vaguely say how much HP bosses have (like being halfway), while combat oriented characters would be able to discern more accurately. While I wouldn’t say no to boss health bars, I feel like there are better and rewarding ways of doing it. Part of the thrill in DST boss fights is that you don’t actually know when the boss is going to die (unless you’re counting hits against their HP), so you’re playing a mental endurance game at the same time. Even more so if you’re running out of resources during the boss fight. Small changes in their sprite or animations would be better, I think. Like Crab King, every time he loses, I think, 10%? of his health a piece of rock chips off of him. Ancient Guardian becomes all gooey and black at 60% health, and his shadow tentacles become more likely to spawn as he’s damaged, this allows you to gauge how low on health he is. Something akin to these for the other bosses would be amazing.
