Spontaneou5
I believe that there are many areas in which DST's world generation could be improved for the sake of gameplay and aesthetics. While some of these issues aren't game-breaking, I feel it would generally improve the gameplay experience for everyone. The Lunar Island The way the lunar island generates in the world is odd. We are all familiar with the horseshoe-shaped arrangement of biomes on the mainland with the unnaturally straight edges that reveals to us where the lunar island is located. Such an arrangement suggests that the lunar island was once a part of the mainland and had broken off into the ocean. However, we know this is not true because the lunar island was a part of the moon that fell into the constant. Spoiler For me, the horseshoe arrangement of mainland biomes feel like an artifact of how the lunar island is coded into the game and it seems rather unintentional. It also seems to force every world to take on the horseshoe arrangement of biomes in order to generate the lunar island and I feel it limits how a world could generate. I would suggest removing the obligatory horseshoe shape and unnaturally straight edges in favor of more natural biome shapes and edges. There could be new and more intuitive indicators for the location of the lunar island. Jumbled Mess of Biomes One big quirk of DST's world generation that really bothers me is the jumbled mess of biomes that seems to form when two biomes try to generate in the same location. What ends up happening is an absolute mishmash of the two biomes, resulting in something that looks like it has been put through a paper shredder. It feels unnatural and it's hard to look at. Klei pls fix. Spoiler Alternative Resource Worlds I don't think there should be strictly twiggy tree/grass gekko worlds. Twiggy trees already populate throughout the world as it ages, and grass gekkos can be willingly spawned from grass tufts. It simply doesn't make sense for some worlds to only have twiggy trees while other worlds have a combination of both twiggy trees and saplings. For grass gekkos worlds, grass tufts only spawn in savanna biomes and are absent from grassland biomes and any other biomes where grass tufts could generate. This removes a large chunk of grass tufts from the world for no reason while grass gekkos slowly die off from meteors, tallbirds, hounds, and such. As for juicy berry bushes, I don't mind it, but I wish there was a method to convert between the variants of berry bushes. I personally prefer the look of the regular berry bushes more. Alternative Biomes There are a handful of alternative biomes that could be generated in a world. For example, the triple MacTusk, quadruple Moose Goose, killer bee biome, second pig village, etc. Some of these alternative biomes can be game changing while other biomes may add little to no value to the world. Take for example the second deciduous biome, which is fairly undesirable as it adds an entire biome where the loot stash can spawn, increasing the amount of the time you may have to spend looking for it. The second pig village adds a third forest biome along with a mini marsh biome. It really doesn't contribute much in terms of resources and you wouldn't notice it if it were gone. Now take these biomes and compare it to the triple MacTusk, which can easily supply a server with walking canes and tams. I think the chances of these alternative biomes generating should be changed; At least make triple MacTusk guaranteed and decrease or remove the other alternative biomes that add little value to the world. Removing those alternative biomes could also make room for new biomes in the future. As far I remember from some post on forum about worldgen, originally Moon Island is generated with mainland and then some biomes are turned to ocean and rivers. That's why we get sometimes Moon Island connected to mainland.
