Maxwell Rework Ideas 2: Electric Boogaloo

Recommended Posts

Previous post.

New year new post. Decided to actually play Maxwell for once in forever and was swiftly reminded that I suck at this game. Nevertheless I have gained new insight and wish to share it. What I said in the previous post mostly applies to this one too.

Maxwell should be able to either "store" his shadows, or do the equivalent of Wendy's "sooth", stopping his shadows from harvesting or fighting everything in sight. Could maybe force them to only do work on whatever Maxwell is harvesting or fighting while like that.

He should also be able to somehow swap his shadows directly to another type, instead of needing to hit them to get back a nightmare fuel and using that, plus an extra one and a tool, to make a new shadow. Maybe you can give them a new tool and they will swap to that one, would make things simpler.

Maxwell used to rule the world, so what if he could use nightmare fuel to force hostile mobs to be allies with him temporarily? It wouldn't work on bosses of course, but imagine a hoard of hounds and clockworks at your beck and call. Probably wouldn't be all that powerful really, but I think it would be very fitting.

Again, shadow items should not drain sanity in his hands, it just makes sense. Would let him easily use the shadow armor, helping him counteract his 75 health. Would also be cool if he could use Wanda's alarming clock like how he can use Wicker's books.

Also again, his shadows should be able to "dodge" attacks. But instead of phasing through them like I said before, it would be cool if they could teleport around like how shadow creature do when hit. Except, they don't take the damage and need a couple seconds before they can teleport again. Would keep things consistent, plus it would help Duelists not be absolutely curb stomped by anything with even a below average amount of health and damage. I'm sure they have their uses even now, but they are just not useful enough to even bother summoning most of the time. Also, if Duelist don't need to kite, then they can wail on enemies instead of giving them one smack and then running off. A drastic increase in their damage per second, they may even be worth their cost finally.

That's all I can think of this exact second, but I might add more to this post later. Please tell me how wrong I am in the comments, cause I don't play enough Maxwell, and apparently neither do people on YouTube. Recent playthroughs of Maxwell on YouTube are near nonexistent. It's kinda funny really, he is fantastic for teams, but no one uploads videos of him solo, those that are up are like 4 years old.

This. This is a change that needs to happen. Make the Codex Umbra have the option to call off the shadow's attack on the environment like Abigail's Flower. I'm so sick of having to punch my shadows whenever I enter base for fear of losing my decorative trees/boulders.

Also, could Maxwell's shadow duelists be given some armor? Maybe they mirror whatever armor Maxwell wears or you can give it to them, but it would be a step in the right direction to not have them be instantly killed by 90% of bosses.

I love the idea of them mirroring Maxwell's current armor, even if it is only for night armor. At that point, go a step further and have them copy his damage if he is using a dark sword

Maybe Maxwell could use a shadow manipulator to learn how to make a "shadow knight" using dark swords and night armor, having the stats of both.

They already do dark sword damage iirc. This would be great if they could copy weapon effects (Morning Star, Cat 'o' Three Tails etc.). Imagine an army of shadow duelists with Thul Clubs constantly summoning shadow tentacles..

They do 40 from what I remember enless they changed that at some point

If they did constant attacking whilst having armor I'm pretty sure they would be pretty busted against solo targets. Atleast getting way more hits in than they normally do lol.

New Item on my wishlist:

Shadow Duelist mob specific AI. Kite things that need to be kited, stand still for things like single spiders or bees. Probably not going to happen but one can hope.

Yah, I dont see that happening, I mean, name one other mob in the game with AI like that. Trying to get them to kite is a losing game, might as well go either the armor route or the wortox route.

im very lazy to read but i think he could have the thing in forge where a bunch of shadow clones attack the enemy for a couple seconds

Damn for once we agree, his Shadow Duelist as they are now, are mediocre as hell and not worth making half the time, and honestly i dont see a way to fix them, unlike other followers, you cant give them protection, cant heal them, and have really low HP.

Having them work like the Forge version fits better and also increases his own DMG, which is a better deal for his low HP.

Like I said in my initial post:

If they teleport when hit, avoiding the damage, then they would have no need for armor or kiting. Of course it would be harder to use on faster attacking monsters or swarms, but it would be pretty good for some, if not most, bosses.

I love the idea of Maxwell taming a horde of hounds and them turning halfway through a boss fight, and then everyone blames Maxwell.

Personally I kinda want Maxwell to be able to use Wanda's clocks (with the exception of the alarming clock) with a crafting animation and 50% chance of failure, also 10 sanity cost and 20 hunger cost (he got hungry).

Also have 1 tier of magic unlocked automatically like wicker. Maybe make it that he needs the codex umbra? Also new crafts using fuel.

Maxwell gets a limit of 3 shadow creatures instead of 2. And in general I want their play style to center around managing sanity in a way where you want to be insane but it being more risky for him then other survivors.

Oooo, I like that idea. Would not only help him get more nightmare fuel, but it also makes sense that They would go after him more than others.
