Croaker50
Hey yall my girlfriend and I are new to DST. We've played a bit and kind of know what we're doing, but I have to ask yall a question about some really weird lag. TLDR: When I host a game we don't get lag, but when she hosts it we get lag. If anyone could help figure out what on Earth is going on, we'd appreciate it. Longer story: We get lag when when she hosts. We both have good compueters: a Dell XPS 15. She runs Minecraft 60FPS amazingly, and I do as well and also COD Black Ops 3 60FPS, so our laptops are capable. I like worlds with ramped up world generation (max amount of trees, food, mobs, etc.) and like 18 mods. When I play by myself in a world like this or run a server for the two of us with these settings, all is fine. But when she runs a server like this, we get intense lag. When we run a server on her world with no mods and vanilla world settings, all is fine. We're both on the same university wifi which works fine for all other purposes: internet, streaming, even gaming. What the hell is going on??? Are there any commonly encountered lag problems in this game that newbies like us wouldn't know about? Thanks yall Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/135484-strange-lag/ Share on other sites
Captain_Rage
You can solve this problem by changing girlfriend. Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/135484-strange-lag/#findComment-1515550 Share on other sites
Mike23Ua
The host always gets significantly less lag then everyone else, DST has built in lag for some reason- like there’s a server setting for lag compensation (don’t ask me what it’s good for I haven’t gotten a clue) Play the game long enough and even the moments of lag will become natural gameplay for you. Couple tips: when you see a little rotating two cog wheel in the lower right corner of your screen the game is Auto-Saving this most commonly happens at the start of each day- lag will happen during auto-save. The game is a Rogue lite experience, there is no manual save… because should you die- it deletes your world. while lagging NEVER stop running away from enemies until you know for absolute certain your not going to lag right back into the center of them. (We’ve all been there and it sucks..) Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/135484-strange-lag/#findComment-1515555 Share on other sites
Falkenpelz
I'd lay blame on the mods, depending on what they are even a single mod can cause lag. It's just weird that it doesn't happen for you. Also, being alone on a server for me always is less laggy then having someone join the same server. Maybe you have to consider reducing the mods and world settings a bit. Default world settings should be okay, but putting stuff like trees to lots increases the number of entities in the world and every on-screen entity slightly increases the work your PC has to put in until you might get lag. For longer running worlds you could use console commands to sweep away the rot in your world to decrease unneeded entities. Also setting stuff like killer bee hives to less can help a bit (killer bees are prime performance killers because of their numbers). Another tip: In the Advanced Settings you'll find the option "Lag Compensation", which is set to "on" by default. This means, that the game simulates fluid movements, even when there is actually lag. It's visually nicer, but can completely mess with gameplay when theres lots of lag, resulting in rubberbanding (aka your character just waddling back and forth, completely ignoring the keys you press). If you turn lag compensation off, you see, where your character actually is standing, preventing rubberbanding. Movement looks more choppy then, but at least you actually walk where you wanna walk. I turn lag compensation off, whenever there is a chaotic lot going on onscreen, so maybe consider this. Btw, you both have the same graphic card, right? Aaaand if you can run this game lagless with 18 mods and worldsettings on more or lots, you have a godlike Pc and I envy you. And yes I'm aware of the new day saving lag thank you @Mike23Ua On 11/20/2021 at 10:35 PM, Falkenpelz said: More stuff Haha thank you. I'm doing a computer science major, so my family invested in a good laptop for myself, and there were still more expensive options. I'm not sure what graphics card she has, but it's good. It's weird cus she can run Minecraft 60FPS with beautiful colors no problem, and she can also run DST fine (I think). It's ONLY when she hosts we get lag, but when I host it's totally fine. Thank you anyways appreciate the reply @Falkenpelz Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/135484-strange-lag/#findComment-1515889 Share on other sites
